And tonight is their graduation concert.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 24 pupils are refugees but this programme means they are still able to develop their musical talents.\u003cbr/\u003e              Fourteen year-old Maha Alsheik Fattouh from Homs in Syria even believes she has had a better chance to pursue her love of music here in Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"In Syria, they always thought art was not really a priority. It comes in second,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              She was immediately drawn to the Buzuq when she started at the school. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is a very nice instrument. It sounds really nice and my instructor played really well. I liked it. It is a Turkish, Kurdish, and Arabic instrument and not many play it. That is why I chose it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Majd Jalal, a 16-year old Palestinian, was born a refugee first in Lebanon, then moved to Syria, and was back again in Lebanon after the war spiralled out of control in his camp near Damascus. \u003cbr/\u003e              He sang in Syria and has now found the school to help him pursue his dreams of forming a professional band. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Music is everything,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              The audience files into the theatre to take their seats.\u003cbr/\u003e              The music performed tonight is the culmination of a programme that has covered Theory of Arabic Music, History of Music, reading scales and learning an instrument of each pupil's choice.\u003cbr/\u003e              Playing the oud and singing is Hassan Youseff.\u003cbr/\u003e              Syria's war had nearly shattered his hope of polishing his deep and powerful voice. He and his family had to leave their home in a suburb of Damascus to Lebanon's Bekaa valley, to become one of the millions of Syrians living in refugee camps around the region. \u003cbr/\u003e              So when Action for Hope Music School announced it is seeking talented children among the refugee community in Lebanon to train, Youssef's family were first to encourage him to enrol.\u003cbr/\u003e              A year and half later, the 14 year-old is one of the school's leading singers.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"One day we were sitting at home. We only heard the sound of a mortar, it fell near us. When we looked it had apparently brought down a whole building. That is all I remember,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"(Music) makes one forget everything. Music is the most important thing.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The UNESCO-funded programme also aims to preserve traditional instruments and musical heritage of Syria and the region. \u003cbr/\u003e              Fawaz Baker, a Syrian music adviser for the project, picked 24 children from a total of 200 students who applied for the course. \u003cbr/\u003e              He chose to train them in a diverse set of songs from Turkey, Egypt and Syria. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We tried to diversify, so that the children can choose in the future,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Action for Hope is now taking its programme to Jordan, where 20 new Syrian students have also enrolled to learn music.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Beirut - 23 September 2017 \u003cbr/\u003e              1.
