STORYLINE              Muslims gather for the Friday prayers at the Great Mosque of Brussels. ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Brussels' Great Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre works across the community to fight extremist ideologies.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE\u003cbr/\u003e              Muslims gather for the Friday prayers at the Great Mosque of Brussels.\u003cbr/\u003e              In the absence of minarets in the city, a muezzin sings the call to prayer indoors as the faithful prepare to listen to imam Abdelhadi Sewif's sermon. \u003cbr/\u003e              Located inside the luscious Parc du Cinquantenaire, the Great Mosque of Brussels is a stone's throw from the European Union quarter, in a central position in the Belgian capital. \u003cbr/\u003e              The building co-hosts the Islamic and Cultural Centre of Belgium which offers a wide range of activities from Islam and Arabic classes to conversions to Islam, social and psychological services as well as basic medical assistance for those most in need. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Great Mosque is the city's oldest area and home to one of the largest Muslim communities here, mainly Arab migrants from Maghreb as well as faithful from Turkey. \u003cbr/\u003e              They number between 3,000 and 4,000 on Fridays, a figure that reaches 7,000 during Ramadan and the Eid el-Fitr holiday, Sewif explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              In recent years Muslims in Belgium have attracted a lot of attention for a wave of attacks in Brussels and Paris by Islamic extremists with ties to the Belgian capital. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the 22 March 2016 suicide bomb attacks on the Brussels airport and subway that killed 32 people and wounded more than 300 hundred. \u003cbr/\u003e              As another attack was foiled on 21 June and the Belgian capital remains on high alert, Sewif reflects on the challenge of Muslim radicalisation. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Egypt-born imam points out that extremism isn't confined to the Muslim religion but he does blame ignorance and the influence of social media. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"People don't understand their religion properly and such misunderstanding leads to extremism. These days education doesn't just take place in schools or at home, but through other means.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Now men and women can get information from social media but the information provided there isn't correct, isn't trustworthy. Some people don't get their religious education in school or at the mosque but tend to rely on unknown sources and that leads to extremism,\" Sewif says. \u003cbr/\u003e              Against this backdrop the Islamic and Cultural Centre of Belgium has just replaced its director following the departure of Jamal Saleh Momenah in May. \u003cbr/\u003e              Egypt-born Tamer Abou El Saod was named the centre's Executive Supervisor by the World Muslim League. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Saudi Arabia-based NGO, dedicated to the spread and understanding of Islam, is the financial sponsor of the Brussels' Islamic and Cultural Centre. \u003cbr/\u003e              El Saod acknowledges it's hard to control the possible access of extremists to the mosque, but says that the centre plays an important role in Belgium, in line with the League's mission to promote a \"moderate\", \"peaceful, real\" image of Islam.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I can't say that we have a problem or a big problem but our rule is very important, we have to show the real picture of Islam and everything related to it. The centre has been here for almost 50 years - in 2018 it will be 50 years since its foundation.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"The centre plays an important role within the Islamic society here, by liaising with the community as well as with the Belgian society in general, both the Belgian population and the government. Our aim is to clear the real picture of Islam and propagate moderate Islam which we think is the only type of Islam,\" El Saod explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              El Saod has extensive experience in Europe; he completed his economics studies in Sweden before moving to Luxembourg, where he worked in the financial market for almost 30 years.\u003cbr/\u003e              The new director may well be a good fit for strengthening the link between Belgium and its Muslim community. It's an effort that dates back to 1967, when Belgium's King Baudoin donated a building to King Faisal of Saudi Arabia during the latter's visit to Brussels.\u003cbr/\u003e              That 19th century building, in the Parc du Cinquantenaire, became the site of Brussels first mosque. \u003cbr/\u003e              The city's Muslim community developed from here, Sewif says. \u003cbr/\u003e              Almost 50 years on, the Islamic and Cultural Centre provides services unavailable at the time: they include family mediation, a financial support system for the poorest, and medical consultations provided by volunteer doctors. \u003cbr/\u003e              As the centre offers preparatory courses to those willing to convert and embrace the Muslim religion, imam Sewif says that they too present an opportunity to fight extremism. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The centre focuses on people who converted so we can explain to them the religion, moderate Islam, away from extremism and radicalism.
