STORYLINE:              Early evening...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A coding school in London is offering a scholarship specifically for Muslim women.\u003cbr/\u003e              They hope to encourage an increased diversity in the tech industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Early evening in trendy east London and most people are trying to get home as soon as possible.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Shoreditch area is a hub for start ups, particularly in the tech industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              But rather than going home, these women are hoping to get a foot in the door.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sitting in a converted warehouse building, they are learning how to code in order to produce websites and apps.\u003cbr/\u003e              They are part of a class run by coding school 23 Code Street - a start up in Shoreditch which offers web developing courses for women.\u003cbr/\u003e              Recently, in partnership with Muslim lifestyle website Amaliah, 23 Code Street coding school offered two scholarship places specifically for Muslim women.\u003cbr/\u003e              Halima Waghe is one of the successful applicants.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 33-year old mother of three previously worked in the legal industry but she heard about the scholarship on Twitter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I thought it was a wonderful opportunity because I think that Muslim women are under-represented in the tech industry so I think it was important for me to try.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Her friends and family were delighted she got it but were surprised because of her lack of knowledge in the subject.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"(I had) No background at all in the tech industry, nothing. But I was always hearing about coding, the fact that coding is very important now so that's why I decided that even if I didn't have any experience in coding that it was a nice opportunity to learn and start from the beginning, to try to learn the coding.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Her fellow scholarship winner is 22-year-old university student Iqra Mohamed who began teaching herself to code when she was a teenager.\u003cbr/\u003e              She had a marketing job at another start up and found she was more interested in what the web developers were doing.\u003cbr/\u003e              However, as a Somali refugee, she noticed that there weren't many people like her in the tech industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              The tech industry has come under particular fire recently for a lack of diversity.\u003cbr/\u003e              There was a recent backlash at Google, where a male engineer blamed biological differences for the paucity of female programmers.\u003cbr/\u003e              Leading tech companies, including Google, Facebook and Uber, have said they are trying to improve hiring and working conditions for women.\u003cbr/\u003e              But diversity numbers are barely changing.\u003cbr/\u003e              This situation encouraged Anisah Osman Britton to found 23 Code Street.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I was working in tech before starting all of this, and working in a corporate accelerator and I kept noticing that all the companies we were working with were men, and all the technological people, with the tech skills, were also all men. It was sort of like one in ten was a woman,\" recalls Osman Britton.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I started to see the impact this was having and seeing there was a lack of diversity in these places which was causing real issues. Things like not catering for women when you were building applications, forgetting that there were disabled people you needed to cater for.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Through sharing a work space, Osman Britton got talking to Nafisah Bakkar, the founder of a Muslim lifestyle website, Amaliah.\u003cbr/\u003e              Both women are Muslim and had noticed a lack of women like them in tech positions throughout the industry.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"No-one looks like us at the top, there are no people that we aspire to be, no role models. We hear of the Mark Zuckerbergs, we hear of the Bill Gates of the world, but where's that big woman at the top? So that's one of the main issues of not getting into tech,\" points out Osman Britton.\u003cbr/\u003e              Bakkar had a unique position having been in the same position as the students.\u003cbr/\u003e              When she started her website, she had to learn coding from scratch.\u003cbr/\u003e              Having seen the lack of diversity from different angles, both women were determined to make a change.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"For us it's really important that we're seeing lots of demographics and sub communities being able to learn that skill (coding) because ultimately the people that know how to code and the people that are aware of these languages are the people that inform what products are being built, and the inclusivity behind these products. So that was a huge driver for us,\" says Bakkar.\u003cbr/\u003e              And their idea paid off - the initial tweet announcing the Muslim women's scholarship was retweeted over a hundred times and they received dozens of applicants.\u003cbr/\u003e              They now plan to offer more spaces for those still interested and they are working with people already in the tech industry to arrange placements and jobs for their students.\u003cbr/\u003e              Osman Britton has also reached out to tech companies and coding schools in the Middle East, particularly Dubai, to see if they can help get more women involved.\u003cbr/\u003e              With schemes like this and a more open approach to the problem, Bakkar is confident that a change will come.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I'm definitely hopeful about the future. Just being in the start up scene I have seen so many female founders, so many women who code and that for me has given me so much hope about where we can go,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think it is a game of patience, change does take time and it's not going to be tomorrow that we're going to see all the FTSE 100 CEOs being women of colour, but it will take time.
