The Oscar-nominated actor walked the TIFF red carpet of \"The Current...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eBENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, CAST WALK TIFF RED CARPET FOR 'THE CURRENT WAR'\u003cbr/\u003e              Benedict Cumberbatch loves the challenge of playing historical figures.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Oscar-nominated actor walked the TIFF red carpet of \"The Current War\" Saturday night (9 SEPTEMBER) where he takes on the role of legendary inventor Thomas Edison.\u003cbr/\u003e              It's not the first time Cumberbatch walked a TIFF red carpet as a significant real life character. In 2014, he was here for \"The Imitation Game,\" portraying mathematician Alan Turing.\u003cbr/\u003e              He loves the challenge of playing these figures.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"When you've got children, babies staring at a light bulb, you suddenly do take a step back and realise what we have taken for granted for so much of our lives. It's kind of a miracle and this was at the point where people were literally getting a horse and carriage or walking for days or getting trains to go and see a shop that was lit up by electric light, by incandescent light and it was the moment when we turned Promethean and created day out of night. That's kind of an exciting chapter of history no matter who you're playing in it and I just thought, you know, it's a challenge to play such a titanic figure in American culture and I like a challenge\" Cumberbatch said.\u003cbr/\u003e              The film centers on the intense rivalry between Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nicola Tesla to decide which electrical system would power the world.\u003cbr/\u003e              Edison was known for being more egotistical than his fellow electric titans, but Cumberbatch was reluctant to put Edison's ego ahead of his greatness.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I don't want to sit and judgement on the guy. I have a, you have a strong association for a character when sometimes you're more empathetic than a colder, more objective critic would be who's analysing the whole history of all of them. They're very every different human beings. That's all I would say in his defence. Tesla was vibrant, visionary, a real genius. Someone who could prophetically see way into the future. Whereas Westinghouse and Edison were trying to tidy up the next decade. Westinghouse was he a nicer man - possibly, yes. I think very much what happened to Edison in this, but you know, was he profoundly deaf, did he have things, did he have his inventions constantly being preyed upon by others, not as much as Edison did. I don't know, they're all products of their environment. I can't really judge the guy\" added Cumberbatch.\u003cbr/\u003e              Nicholas Hoult plays Nicola Tesla, the former assistant to Edison that goes to work for Westinghouse. Hoult finds his character far more sympathetic.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I mean Tesla as wonderful as he was, I think a lot of it didn't revolve around ego as much for him. He really believed in supplying power and the future and that being right for everyone to have, so for him it was something very different although the one thing about him that was interesting even when he was penniless and falling on hard times, he'd always make sure that he was very well presented and looking spick and span\" said Hoult.\u003cbr/\u003e              After Tesla goes to work for Westinghouse, he designed the Alternating Current (AC) electrical supply system that is the basis of powering our homes and offices. Michael Shannon, who plays Westinghouse, spoke of the pitfalls of being egotistical, but was sympathetic toward Edison.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I tried to stay away from it but it's inevitable I think. I mean if you have some success every once in a while you're going to think you're a big deal but you know these guys were constantly getting knocked down a peg too.
