However resistance to modern technologies like drones in favour of traditional farming...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Cambodia's first commercial drone company is promising farmers higher yields if they embrace new technology.  \u003cbr/\u003e              However resistance to modern technologies like drones in favour of traditional farming practices remains a big challenge.  \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Cambodia's first commercial drone company, SM Waypoint, is offering farmers high-tech solutions to increase their yields. \u003cbr/\u003e              Set up in 2015 by American pilot Jimmy Jacks, all seven of the company's drone pilots received specialised training in Australia and Hong Kong and they all have degrees in geology, mining or engineering.      \u003cbr/\u003e              Different types of drones are used for different purposes, says Jacks who is the only foreigner on the team.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is a commercial drone. It is made for use in agriculture. It is a quadcopter meaning it has four propeller system. Underneath the platform you will see this container. The container is for aerial application of fluids. It can, it can contain pesticides, fertilisers, anything you would spray, with a human walking through the fields with a pack on his back, very very dangerous applications of pesticides, this can do much, much safer,\" says Jacks.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Cambodian farmers often use no protective gear when spraying their crops with potentially hazardous chemicals. \u003cbr/\u003e              Jacks says using drones for spraying could help eliminate any risks to their health. \u003cbr/\u003e              However, the higher costs involved means it is not a viable option for most of the country's cash-strapped small farmers. \u003cbr/\u003e              The drones can also offer a bird's eye view of how an entire crop is faring. SM Waypoint's most popular product measures the 'Normalised Difference Vegetation Index' of crops which measures their health using specialised cameras.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Ok so let's take a look at our parts of drone,\" says Business Development Leader Mak Syna. \"And you can see this is the auto-pilot that control all the drone. And this is the part that we put the camera here and we have two camera to put at the same time - RGB and NIR.\" \u003cbr/\u003e              The RGB camera fitted inside this AS-III fixed-wing drone captures the amount of near-infrared  and red light emitted by the plants.\u003cbr/\u003e              When there is healthy vegetation, it picks up higher amounts of infrared and lower amounts of red light, making it easy to spot areas where plants are stressed.\u003cbr/\u003e              The information can help increase yields by an average of around 10 percent per year, says Business Development Leader Mak Syna.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We focus primarily on agriculture helping farmers by increasing their crop yields,\" he says. \"So how do we increase their yields? Our equipment is the latest modern technology that can inspect the crop's health in the fields, allowing farmers to take early corrective action where necessary.\"  \u003cbr/\u003e              The AS-III launches off a catapult, ascending rapidly at 25 metres per second. \u003cbr/\u003e              With a 3.3-metre wingspan it can soar at an altitude of 3,000 metres and it has a range of 180 kilometres, covering up to 1,800 hectares in a single flight. \u003cbr/\u003e              The drone follows a pre-programmed flight plan, producing images with a resolution up to 3.8 centimetres from high in the air.\u003cbr/\u003e              SM Waypoint currently charges US$4:50 to analyse one hectare which they say boosts the annual value of yields by around $20 per hectare on average.   \u003cbr/\u003e              But despite the increased yields and profits, the upfront costs involved means drones are not affordable for most small farmers in Cambodia, although the technology makes sense for larger farms.\u003cbr/\u003e              Resistance to new farming techniques in favour of traditional practices is a big challenge, says UAV Team Leader Koeurn Chenda.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is still a bit difficult for farmers because they do not know how to use drone technology in the agriculture sector yet,\" he says. \"They do farming based on the habits learned from generation to generation so using drones here still faces a lot of challenges.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Sok Puthyvuth is President of the Cambodia Rice Federation and says farmers just need some time to adjust to benefits of technology.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I don't think there's a push back in the drone, in this new technology, precision farm agriculture. I think it's just that…I think when, when something is new the country has a kind of wrestle with itself, how it is it going to understand…how are they going to understand this and kind of, you know, trying to grasp the new ideas and the new tools that are coming to support them? Because I think they know that this is supposed to help them and they know this is the trend that every big major country who are serious about agriculture are adopting. So bringing it here sometimes it felt that oh, maybe it's too advanced for us and it's too far ahead but I think it's not that far ahead, in fact it'd already here,\" he says.     \u003cbr/\u003e              Though the company focuses mainly on agricultural projects, the potential uses of drones are extremely varied, everything from real estate surveys to finding the most suitable locations for factories.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to a May 2016 report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the potential global market for drone solutions is valued at over US$127 billion, including US$32.4 billion in agriculture alone.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Soma Farm, Bati District, Takeo province - 23 June 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
