Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which paid most of the 3.7...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Water-poor Jordan has launched a project utilising seawater to produce crops and fresh water with clean energy. \u003cbr/\u003e              Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, which paid most of the 3.7 million US dollars for the project, inaugurated the facility in the kingdom's port city of Aqaba. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Lush green plants flourish in this greenhouse.\u003cbr/\u003e              And what's remarkable is they are growing with the help of seawater.\u003cbr/\u003e              This greenhouse is part of the 'Sahara Forest Project', a new scheme that produces crops with clean energy.\u003cbr/\u003e              Jordan's King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway have come to the Red Sea port city of Aqaba for the project's inauguration and to take a tour of the facilities.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Norwegian royal is here to represent his country which contributed most of the 3.7 million US dollar costs.\u003cbr/\u003e              He even gets to sample the vegetables.\u003cbr/\u003e              Joakim Hauge, CEO of the Sahara Forest Project, explains the technology behind the greenhouse.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is saltwater-cooled greenhouses, where we utilise saltwater to produce freshwater and to cool and humidify the air inside the greenhouses. That means we can utilise all the good sun here in Jordan without all the heat,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              He adds that they are also planting native species outdoors to introduce vegetation to previously barren land.\u003cbr/\u003e              Crown Prince Haakon says the project has \"great promise\" for the future.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's impressive to see how technology can be used in such a sustainable way and to produce agriculture goods in a quite tough climate,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Last month, a report by Stanford University suggested that Jordan, one of the world's driest countries, could face more severe droughts unless new technologies are applied in farming and other sectors.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This project is very important in Jordan to develop the area of Wadi Araba, and also to develop abandoned areas because of the lack of water and high temperatures,\" says Imad Fakhouri, Jordan's Planning Minister.\u003cbr/\u003e              The facility, surrounded by rocky desert, uses seawater to cool greenhouses. Desalinated seawater irrigates crops, such as pesticide-free cucumbers.
