STORYLINE:       ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Campaigns for the independence referendum in Iraq's northern Kurdish region was launched today.\u003cbr/\u003e              But in the nationalist stronghold of Dohuk, only the 'Yes' side has a voice.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Carefully fixed into position - a huge 'Yes' poster dominates this Dohuk street.\u003cbr/\u003e              Today is the launch of the campaign for the referendum on Iraqi Kurdish independence, marking a three-week countdown to the vote on 25 September. \u003cbr/\u003e              Iraq's autonomous northern Kurdish region is going to the polls to decide if it wants to secede from Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003e              The 'Yes' campaign is expected to win comfortably but Iraq and regional powers, including the United States, have condemned the vote as destabilising.\u003cbr/\u003e              On the streets of Dohuk, a nationalist stronghold, residents are not swayed from having their say.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is over a hundred years that we have lived under occupation and we have never had the opportunity to decide our own destiny, and therefore it is crucial for us to go all together and vote yes in the referendum for independence,\" says shop owner and 'Yes' voter Safar Djemali.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 'Yes' campaign has dressed the city in Kurdish flags and posters calling for independence.\u003cbr/\u003e              Activists hand out flyers, and shopkeepers are putting up pro-independence material. \u003cbr/\u003e              In his shop, printer Aras Younis Omar churns out pro-independence posters.\u003cbr/\u003e              And he's clear he would not do business with campaigners who are against independence.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Definitely we would not print it. We only print for the 'Yes' campaign. Why? Because that would be against my country. I can't do it. It's not that I work here only for the money,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 'No' vote does not have a voice in Dohuk. \u003cbr/\u003e              Government officials have not allowed those who are opposed to independence to campaign, and many who have tried have faced problems with the authorities. \u003cbr/\u003e              NRT, an anti-independence TV channel, has been taken off air and had its Irbil office ransacked by security forces.\u003cbr/\u003e              Masoud Sarni, head of the 'Yes' campaign in Dohuk, says the 'No' side is \"the enemy's voice\". \u003cbr/\u003e              \"We will not allow the 'No' campaign here, because they are are against the people of Kurdistan, the different ethnic groups of Kurdistan and their independent state,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Many independence supporters see the referendum as a chance to correct historical wrongs, a lack of Kurdish statehood and a hundred years of oppression at the hands of successive Iraqi governments, including the Anfal campaign of the late 1980s that left at least 50,000 Kurds dead. \u003cbr/\u003e              Those who are opposed say that the foundations of independence, including strong political institutions, a strong economy and a favourable regional situation, are not present and Kurdish president Masoud Barzani, whose mandate expired in 2015, is playing the nationalist card to strengthen his domestic position.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Dohuk - 5 September 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
