STORYLINE:              Leaning over her digital drawing board, Italian-Tunisian illustrator and...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              An Italian-Tunisian illustrator fights prejudices using her comics about Islam, the veil and Arab Springs.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Leaning over her digital drawing board, Italian-Tunisian illustrator and graphic journalist Takoua Ben Mohamed is focused on the task at hand.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 26-year-old is working on one of her most well-known images - that of a smiling young woman wearing a veil.\u003cbr/\u003e              Ben Mohamed was born in Douz but moved to Rome when she was just eight and she now has a studio in the Pigneto neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003e              Twelve years ago she started a project called \"Fumetto Intercultura\" (intercultural comic strip) - the aim of which is to dismantle prejudices and to bring different cultures closer together. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"I have always drawn, since I was a child, and I started \"Fumetto Intercultura (Intercultural comic strip)\" when I was 14. The drawing is the only thing that I brought to Italy with me from Tunisia when I was 8 and it was my salvation because it was the only means of communication that I could use because I didn't speak Italian I first went to school.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              From the beginning, her comic strips were on display at conventions promoted by cultural associations and, at the end of 2009, Ben Mohamed started a Facebook page and then a blog. \u003cbr/\u003e              After high school, she studied for three years at the Nemo Academy in Florence, a school dedicated to design and film-making.  \u003cbr/\u003e              She explains that with her comics she wants to challenge prejudices but also show the everyday life of a young Muslim woman. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"It's important for me to destroy people's prejudices about the veil, talking about everyday life, such as how to wear the veil or the freaking out in the morning, because those are things that everyone has in common, and (it's a way) to approach the reader and then to try to understand the more complex things, like (trying to understand) why there are prejudices about the veil; because I think, there is a wrong message about Islam and the veil in the media,\" she explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ben Mohamed has been wearing the veil since she was 12 years old. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The first day (I wore) a veil, I was going to school carrying a backpack bigger than myself and a child yelled at me \"Terrorist Taliban\" and I didn't know what it meant, thus I went to him and asked 'What does it mean?' and he told me 'I don't know'. 'Neither do I' (I replied). It was a serious question, I didn't want to provoke him or to make him feel uncomfortable. Then I started to do research and I have never taken off the veil, I researched from a religious point of view and a political one, etc,\" she recalls, laughing as she tells the story. \u003cbr/\u003e              Last year, she made a collection of her comic strips for a book, called \"Under the Veil\" (\"Sotto il velo\" in Italian), focusing on the daily life of a girl wearing a veil. \u003cbr/\u003e              The main character of the book is a girl, an alter-ego of Ben Mohamed.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"A young girl who has decided to wear the veil, which is the image that represents me the most, (is) on the cover there with a full smile, which is different from the image that we see of the Muslim woman in the media; she's attractive, she's ironic but also self-sceptical because, first of all, she is mocking herself, for instance when she wears makeup and she dirties the veil, or she mocks the veiled fashion bloggers, who have been a trend over the last few years,\" she explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              Ben Mohamed notes the different forms of prejudice she has witnessed, both in Italy and Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"This is interesting for me, experiencing different prejudices according to (different) cultures because they are not the same everywhere but prejudices are everywhere.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Ben Mohamed also uses her work to talk about other issues, such as women and children's rights, but also specific political events: her father moved to Italy at the beginning of the 90s fleeing from the Ben Ali regime and her next book, which is expected to be published in November, is about the Arab Spring in Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Rome - 2 August 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
