The CAR-T...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN: \u003cbr/\u003e              The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the first treatment that genetically engineers patients' own blood cells into an army of assassins which seek and destroy childhood leukemia.\u003cbr/\u003e              The CAR-T cell treatment developed by Novartis and the University of Pennsylvania is the first gene therapy to hit the U.S. market, but it's expensive and custom made making its supply limited.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE FOR ANIMATION \u003cbr/\u003e              The immune system defends the body against disease.\u003cbr/\u003e              T-cells are one of its key soldiers, targeting infected or abnormal cells, but cancer can block those defences. \u003cbr/\u003e              Now scientists are genetically modifying patients own cells to make them smarter and tougher at seeking out and destroying cancer.\u003cbr/\u003e              One version is called CAR-T-cell therapy - T-cells customized to zero in on a patients specific kind of cancer.\u003cbr/\u003e              It all starts when a patient's blood is filtered through a machine that separates T-cells and other white blood cells from the rest.\u003cbr/\u003e              Scientists mix the collected T-cells with a virus which is disabled, so it won't cause illness\u003cbr/\u003e              Instead that virus carries genetic instructions for the T-cells to grow an artificial receptor, it's called a chimeric antigen receptor, or CAR.\u003cbr/\u003e              This will track its cancer target and rev up for an attack.\u003cbr/\u003e              Millions of copies of the engineered cell are grown in a laboratory, and given back to the patient intravenously\u003cbr/\u003e              The first CART-T cells are being tested against types of leukemia and lymphoma that bare a marker or antigen named CD19.\u003cbr/\u003e              Once in the blood stream these home in on that antigen and grab hold of them.\u003cbr/\u003e              They release toxic chemicals that trigger the cells death.\u003cbr/\u003e              As one cancer cell dies, CAR-T cells move on to the next, multiplying in the blood, until they are no longer needed.\u003cbr/\u003e              The drug is made from scratch for every patient. It's  first use is aimed at patients desperately ill with a common paediatric cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia which affects 3,000 children and young adults in the U.S. each year. \u003cbr/\u003e              The drug approved Wednesday will be sold under the brand name Kymriah (kihm-REYE'eh), and will only be available at centres with specially trained medical staff.\u003cbr/\u003e              Scientists are also are trying to make CAR-T therapies which fight more common solid tumors such as brain, breast or pancreatic cancers although this will be a harder next step.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              ASSOCIATED PRESS ANIMATION –  ++MUTE++\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
