The country's unusual weather pattern draws thousands of visitors every year seeking...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEAD IN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Omanis are celebrating the yearly monsoon season with a 60 day festival of dance, concerts and even exorcisms. \u003cbr/\u003e              The country's unusual weather pattern draws thousands of visitors every year seeking relief from scorching temperatures elsewhere in the Arab world. \u003cbr/\u003e              \u003cbr/\u003e              STORY-LINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              On the eastern edge of the Arabian peninsula, a region disappears under sky-wide blankets of fog as the desert blooms green. \u003cbr/\u003e              This is the Omani monsoon: a phenomenon that draws hundreds of thousands with cooler weather and stunning vistas for three months, until September 21. \u003cbr/\u003e              So far this year there are twice as many tourists than last year when more than 650,000 visited the fog-drenched mountains and verdant valleys of the Dhofar region, according to the Omani statistics agency. \u003cbr/\u003e              Every year this three-month-long summer storm ignites a seasonal bloom of green on an otherwise scorched-brown Arabian peninsula.\u003cbr/\u003e              Despite fog obscuring the sun, thousands of people venture up to the lush mountains and coasts during the monsoon. \u003cbr/\u003e              On a fog-shrouded plateau, picnickers sing and snap selfies below emerald mountains.\u003cbr/\u003e              Omani resident Adnan al-Mahrouqi is one of the many tourists to visit the Salalah region.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"HonestIy, I must encourage everyone to come to Salalah during this season. Praise the Lord that we decided for the first time to come down this year - this place opens up the soul, it's relaxing for everyone young and old,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e              A 60-day festival draws about 50,000 people nightly for dagger-dance competitions, musical performances and Sufi exorcisms performed in celebration of Oman's cultural diversity of Arab, African, and Asian roots intertwined by the summer rain clouds. \u003cbr/\u003e              Sprawling festival grounds include faux fort walls, turrets and ornate gates with three stages, life-size models of traditional Omani homes and vendors selling grilled meat, fruit and frankincense. \u003cbr/\u003e              Festival Heritage Presenter, Ali Saleh says the underlying principle of the celebration is to preserve Omani traditions. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Truly the monsoon season of all the seasons is considered a time when the community gathers, and indeed the monsoon is the reason for Dhofar itself. Once upon a time life was very hard, so we'd have to prepare for this time of year,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              The government of Dhofar established the monsoon festival in 1998. Nineteen years later, the festival draws acts from 40 countries.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Sufi order performs musical exorcisms, with 12 dancers beating drums and singing as a man inhales frankincense and takes off his shirt, eyes ablaze with possession by a \"jinn\" or spirit in Arabic. \u003cbr/\u003e              The festival also highlights the unique weather pattern of the region, with a dedicated meteorological exhibition.  \u003cbr/\u003e              The mountains ringing Salalah trap moisture from the Indian Ocean monsoon, says chief regional meteorologist Khalid al-Najar, pointing out a satellite photo of a small rain-gray patch on an otherwise scorched-brown Arabian peninsula. \u003cbr/\u003e              Air pressure pockets above Saudi Arabia and Tibet drive air currents to Oman as the temperature difference between scorching sands in the Arabian peninsula and cooler waters churned up by Indian Ocean winds produce rain-heavy clouds. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Many tourists come here to enjoy this beautiful weather and they're coming from the Arabian Peninsula and other places where temperatures are approaching 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) – this is intense heat,\" says al-Najar. \u003cbr/\u003e              Each night, a different Omani city takes control of the main stage to show off songs, handicrafts, dances, clothes, and games. \u003cbr/\u003e              The port of Sohar stages a giant maritime-themed show. \u003cbr/\u003e              The organisers say 60 percent of visitors come from within Oman, the rest from Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar with few visitors from outside the Arab world. \u003cbr/\u003e              Far above the festivities and clouds, another aspect of the monsoon is trotting on a cliff.\u003cbr/\u003e              Camels are brought here and to coastal areas during the monsoon because their padded feet cannot grip well in mud.\u003cbr/\u003e              Once the monsoon is over, the camels will journey back down into the dry land.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Al-Houta, Oman - 28 July 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
