PROJECT HELPS DISABLED CHILDREN EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH DANCE \u003cbr/\u003e              Whether it's jumping, waving, or something as expressive as moving your eyebrows, anyone can dance.\u003cbr/\u003e              That's the idea behind the weeklong D.R.E.A.M. project, where disabled children learn to express themselves. \u003cbr/\u003e              The program founded by a dance artist and a physical therapist focuses on each child's abilities with the ultimate goal to create a connection with one another, and the non-disabled children that assist them.\u003cbr/\u003e              Held at the National Dance Institute in New York, the program pairs able-bodied NDI dancers with children with disabilities.  All children involved in the program learn to work together in a fun and encouraging way.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Dancer and co-founder Kay Gayner explains the power of dance.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I think there are many elements, but I think dance is inherently joyful because moving your bodies. One of the things we say is if you can blink your eyes, you can dance. Everybody really can dance, and so part of the exploration that we start on day one is finding how if we create a movement, we can make a translation for all different kinds of dancers with all different kinds of abilities,\" Gayner said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Gayner feels the bi-yearly initiative offers advantages that go beyond the program. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Not that the dancers with disabilities can't dance on their own, but when we use the program as a catalyst to facilitate connections and create relationships between children with and without disabilities, it became this beautiful thing, and the possibilities for dance expand exponentially, but also the possibilities for transformation,\" Gayner said. \u003cbr/\u003e              One of the participants, eight-year-old Isaac, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He lives in the Harlem neighborhood where NDI resides, and has been in the program since he was five years old. Isaac also participates in NDI's after school program. \u003cbr/\u003e              He sums up how dance makes him feel. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"When I feel happy, I will make the sun bright, and it shines,\" Isaac said.\u003cbr/\u003e              Agnes McConlogue-Ferro is the program's other co-founder, who in her day job is a professor of physical therapy at Stoney Brook University. She explains what the program does.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Exactly that, bringing it all together, so that children - we do a screening before the children participate in the program, so I can sort of see what potential they have. I'm not uninterested in what they can't do, and make that better. I'm interested in trying to augment what they can do. So we identify those, and Kay and I get together with the other dance artists, and we try and figure out how to really put a spotlight on it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              McConlogue-Ferro sees no exception to anyone that wants to be part of the program. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"So Alexa, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy uses her eyebrows. So she's non-motoric. She's really non-motoric anywhere else, except for a finger to drive her chair, and the use of her eyebrows. So that becomes the solo, so the kid's kind of all come in together, and then that's her solo. So it's really highlighting whatever, whatever that child does.
