The 20-year-old assumed duties as first captain of the 4,400-member Corps of Cadets, after first...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSimone Askew marched into US history on Monday as the first black woman to lead cadets at the West Point military academy.\u003cbr/\u003e              The 20-year-old assumed duties as first captain of the 4,400-member Corps of Cadets, after first leading 1,200 new cadets in an early morning 12-mile (19 kilometres) march back to the academic complex.\u003cbr/\u003e              First captain is the highest position in the cadet chain of command at West Point.\u003cbr/\u003e              Askew, an international history major from Fairfax, Virginia, will be responsible for the overall performance of the Corps of Cadets. \u003cbr/\u003e              Her duties also include implementing a class agenda and acting as a liaison between the cadets and the administration.\u003cbr/\u003e              General Vincent K. Brooks, commander of US Forces Korea, was West Point's first African American first captain in 1979. \u003cbr/\u003e              The first female in that role, in 1989, was Colonel Kristin Baker, now commander of the Analytic Center of the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Europe.\u003cbr/\u003e              Women make up about 20 percent of cadets, who are usually commissioned as first lieutenants in the army upon graduation. \u003cbr/\u003e              The academy created a diversity office in 2014 with the goal of recruiting more women and African Americans and increasing diversity among department heads and other leaders.\u003cbr/\u003e              Askew's appointment came a year after a photo of 16 graduating black female cadets raising their fists drew criticism from online commentators who accused them of supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. \u003cbr/\u003e              Supporters said they were making a gesture of solidarity and accomplishment as graduation drew near. \u003cbr/\u003e              West Point investigated and determined they hadn't violated any army rules.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              West Point, New York - August 14, 2017 \u003cbr/\u003e              1.
