The religious sanctuary has become a sanctuary for these rare creatures.
Each evening Father Lauro Palú, the director at the sanctuary brings a tray filled with different kinds of food and puts it on the floor in front of the church, while visitors sit silently around on garden benches.
Tonight, a group of students from Saint Paul high school in nearby Belo Horizonte listen while Father Lauro explains popular misconceptions about the animal.
"People believe that the wolf's leather repels snakes, so they kill the poor one. They remove the skin and hang it on the veranda at the farms as if it could repel snakes. It has no effect. The wolf is very efficient against snakes while alive, since it eats both snakes and lizards," he says.
After a while, the first wolves start making their timid appearances to grab some of the food. Bananas are first to go. The maned wolf is an omnivore, eating fruit from the surrounding savannas, in particular the "wolf fruit" (lobeira) as well as small animals, rodents, lizards, snakes and even stealing chicken from farms.
The wolf appears alert, but it is not the people watching the animal fears, but smaller fox like canids which compete for food and can attack the lone wolves in groups.
The maned wolf has very fine hearing and its large ears can be observed operating independently from each other, scanning the darkness like radars in order to detect foxes.
Various wolves visit throughout the night and into the early hours, until the banquet the priests have prepared is gone.
Next morning visitors enjoy nature walks, but the chance of glimpsing a maned wolf in daylight is very low. Visitors are lucky to find a wolf footprint in the mud.
"I think what's most fantastic is being so near while the wolf remains free. He comes because he wants to, stays as long as he pleases and leaves to be free again," says Camila Valvassori who has visited several times.
"The animal is superb, it is majestic, very tall and elegant. I had seen it in photographs and it seemed less powerful. It's a magnificent, splendid animal," says Achille Queverue from France.
The same routine is repeated every night all year round at the sanctuary.
"This conception of the beauty of nature, of its sacredness as it came from the hand of God is a very formative value for all, against war, against hatred, destruction, prejudice. It has been recognized that Caraça has contributed greatly to demystify the image of the big bad wolf," says biologist Aline Abreu who runs the environmental projects at the Sanctuary of Caraça.
Since the wolves began visiting in the 1980's many cubs have been born here.
