Perhaps the most anticipated launch this year is the maiden flight for...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              More than 230 balloons are taking to the skies at the UK's Bristol Balloon Fiesta - the largest annual event of its kind in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003e              Perhaps the most anticipated launch this year is the maiden flight for a balloon flown by a teenage pilot who's recovered from cancer.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              Hundreds of balloons in the early morning skies above Bristol.\u003cbr/\u003e              This is Europe's largest annual balloon festival and it attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators every year.\u003cbr/\u003e              After a weekend of wind and rain, the sun breaks through, giving perfect conditions for flying. \u003cbr/\u003e              Hundreds of balloonists, many who've travelled from all over the world, take the opportunity and launch in a mass ascent.\u003cbr/\u003e              Bristol is considered by many to be the spiritual home of modern hot-air ballooning and is home to Cameron Balloons, the largest balloon maker in the world.\u003cbr/\u003e              19-year-old balloonist James Burrows is arriving with his trailer at this year's event.\u003cbr/\u003e              He's been coming every year since he was a baby - it's fair to say he's grown up with balloons.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I'm 19-years-old and I've been coming to the Fiesta 19 years, I came here right from when I was young to my age now and it means the absolute world,\" says Burrows.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"If ballooning wasn't in my life I don't know what it would be replaced with, it's a one-of-a-kind hobby, there's nothing quite like, so I think without it I just wouldn't know what to do with myself.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              But three years ago, at the age of 16, Burrows was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his lower abdomen - an uncommon cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.\u003cbr/\u003e              The news came as a total shock for Burrows, who thought the pains in his abdomen were bruising from a game of rugby.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Basically, within a week of having these pains, I was up on an oncology ward having chemotherapy pumped into me,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And to go from that happy person, running around, playing rugby, having the time of your life at such a young age, really loving life, flying balloons, the whole world's behind you and then for that to happen it's a real shock to the system.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              During his cancer treatment, Burrows was supported by UK-based charity the Teenage Cancer Trust.\u003cbr/\u003e              It put him in touch with other teenagers going through the same thing - including Jess Thomas, a friend who sadly died last year.\u003cbr/\u003e              After his recovery, Burrows and his family wanted to support the charity that had done so much for them.\u003cbr/\u003e              His father, who runs the balloon company 'Lighter than Air', bought a new balloon for his son and branded it with the Teenage Cancer Trust. \u003cbr/\u003e              It's named 'The Spirit of Jess', in memory of his friend.\u003cbr/\u003e              Burrows plans to take it to cancer wards around the UK, offering flights to teenagers and their families.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It means the world, the charity that saved my life, to be looking after their balloon and looking after people associated with them, it just means the absolute world to me,\" says Burrows.\u003cbr/\u003e              Camaraderie among pilots is famous in the ballooning world and helps attract participants all the way from Albuquerque, in New Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003e              Frank Wechter is re-calibrating his senses as he adjusts to the infamous British summer. \u003cbr/\u003e              Rain and strong winds forced the cancellation of several scheduled flights, not something Wechter is used to back home.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"You know, Bristol I was informed has an alternate name known as 'Brizzle', meaning it's drizzling and it's raining,\" says Wechter.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And of course, that's what creates this spectacular green environment behind us. Albuquerque is dry, Albuquerque has 340 days a year of sunshine. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"So, whereas the most experienced pilot in Bristol will fly 55 hours in a year, I'll fly 55 hours in two months.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Wechter says he's honoured to be flying in Bristol and cherishes every moment he gets in the sky. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The other day we flew and we landed in a farmer's field who invited us in for tea and biscuits. That doesn't happen in Albuquerque,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Another pilot who's flown thousands of miles to attend the event is Nigel Black from Hong Kong.\u003cbr/\u003e              Black is a commercial airline captain flying Airbus A350s for Cathay Pacific.\u003cbr/\u003e              On his airline flights, passengers expect to know exactly where they're landing and at what time... it's not quite so straightforward for passengers on a balloon flight.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"With an aeroplane, of course you've got an automatic pilot, you've got a big aeroplane, you can actually get it from A-to-B,\" explains Black.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"With a balloon, I'm not actually sure where I'm going to land, I might have an idea, but I always tell my passengers I know where I'm taking off, but we don't know where we're going to land. That is amazing.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Balloonists are given maps showing sites where they cannot land, but once they're in the air, they're at the mercy of the wind.\u003cbr/\u003e              A nice flat, field with good access for the support crew is ideal. The farmer can expect a bottle of wine for the loan of a temporary airfield.\u003cbr/\u003e              This unlucky crew came down in a field of bullocks and is having to scare away the curious cows as they attempt to quickly recover their balloon.\u003cbr/\u003e              But when the flying ends and the sun sets, the Fiesta isn't over. \u003cbr/\u003e              Here in the pilot's tent, a choreography lesson is taking place along a long line of light bulbs.\u003cbr/\u003e              Ian Martin is leading the only practice for the traditional Night Glow event.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Every other scheme of life, if they were on the West End or anything else to 40,000 people, they would rehearse this tremendously for weeks and weeks and weeks,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"These guys come here and do it that one night and that's it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Illuminated against the night sky, the balloons glow, flicker and flare in time to the music.\u003cbr/\u003e              It attracts tens of thousands of spectators every year. \u003cbr/\u003e              Burrows and his team with the Teenage Cancer Trust are taking part in this year's Glow.\u003cbr/\u003e              The Bristol Balloon Fiesta ran 10-13 August.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Bristol, UK - 13 August 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
