Experts say the camp's rapid growth reflects the dramatic increase in...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              A Rainbow Day Camp in California is serving a small but fast-growing population: transgender children, aged four to twelve-years-old.\u003cbr/\u003e              Experts say the camp's rapid growth reflects the dramatic increase in children \"socially transitioning\" at younger ages across the United States\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              At Rainbow Day Camp in El Cerrito, part of the San Francisco Bay Area, children sing songs, play ball, make art and do wacky relay races.\u003cbr/\u003e              But what makes this summer program unique is the campers it serves: transgender children - some as young as four-years-old. \u003cbr/\u003e              It's a place where they can use the pronoun of their choice and meet other transgender kids and adults, including many of the camp's counsellors.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They're following their creative interests and they don't have this added stress or weight of being othered,\" says camp director Andrew Kramer.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"They get to be their most authentic selves and build community with other people who understand the same life experience.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"People aren't like; 'Oh.' They're more like; 'Okay, that's cool.' And then we just move on,\" says camper James Kaplan.\u003cbr/\u003e              Sandra Collins, a former college professor, started the program two years ago after she struggled to find a camp where her transgender daughter would feel comfortable.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I used to say that the camp began out of sadness because of this experience,\" says Collins.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"But a friend encouraged me to reframe it that the camp began out of love, out of trying to create a safe space for my daughter and then other kids who were like her.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Enrollment has since tripled to 60 campers from California and beyond.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I like to be who I am and it's not fun to be who I am not,\" says Collins' daughter Scarlett Reinhold.\u003cbr/\u003e              Experts say the camp's growth mirrors the sharp increase in transgender children across the United States.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We're definitely seeing more kids, many more kids, socially transitioning at very young ages,\" says Diane Ehrensaft from San Francisco's UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And the reason we're seeing them more is because we're looking for them and letting them be found.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              For critics who question whether pre-school age kids should be allowed to transition so early ... developmental psychologist Ehrensaft says children can identify their gender at a very young age.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"We expect a two-year-old to know 'I am boy, I am girl.'\" she argues.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"So why can't that also apply to transgender children to know it just as well as children who aren't transgender.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Mother Molly Maxwell says that's what happened when her child was a toddler.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"When she learned to talk and have a voice, she was very insistent that she was not a boy, she was a girl and to call her a girl,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e              James Kaplan's mother doesn't regret allowing her child to transition.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"I had to mourn the loss of my daughter and at the same time welcome my son and get to know him,\" says Sara Kaplan.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"And as soon as he transitioned, he was happier, he was confident, he was light.\"\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              El Cerrito, California, US - 12 July 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
