Membership to the national league called ManVFat, is restricted to overweight and obese men who enjoy...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Men are queuing up to join an exclusive football league where losing is the whole point of the game. \u003cbr/\u003e              Membership to the national league called ManVFat, is restricted to overweight and obese men who enjoy football (soccer) and are serious about losing weight.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              In most competitions, points mean prizes, but in this football league the pounds you lose can win you goals.\u003cbr/\u003e              Man V Fat was set up in 2016, by a group of men who believed there weren't enough fatloss schemes aimed specifically at men and too often they tended to be the minority in a zumba dance class.\u003cbr/\u003e              This league is all about tapping into the competitive spirit where winning is everything, especially when it comes to regular weigh-ins. \u003cbr/\u003e              It a sign of how dedicated to this scheme they are that these men will happily turn up after work to play in whatever the weather.\u003cbr/\u003e              They don't need to play football well to qualify, but they have to have a body mass index (BMI) of 28.5. \u003cbr/\u003e              Most people who hit this band of body measurement will be unhealthily overweight, if not obese.\u003cbr/\u003e              As well as performing well in the league, each team wins goals when they reach a target weight. Keep putting the weight on and your team mates will be dealt a penalty. \u003cbr/\u003e              According to the organisers, peer pressure and competition is a perfect weight loss combination.\u003cbr/\u003e              Most of the men who join aim to lose between five and ten per cent of their body fat.\u003cbr/\u003e              Terry Douding is project manager for ManVFat Football and he says the growth of the league shows they're on to a winning formula.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"I mean in the last eighteen months men all around the UK have been able to lose over thirty tons of weight and that is based on men losing one to two stone per season. Most of the men are loosing five per cent and many of them are losing ten per cent of their starting body weight and a lot of that comes down to the peer support from the other men and the coach. You know many of these men won't even be looking for new advice around nutrition, many of the men know what to do, but they need that accountability for change and turning up to a weekly weigh in with nineteen mates looking over their shoulder, knowing that it's the difference between winning, or losing the season, is usually enough for many of the men.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              When players join they fill in a detailed questionnaire which inquires about their goals and where they have failed in the past. \u003cbr/\u003e              Dowding says: \"On week fourteen, from week nine in fact, we would begin encouraging clients to fill those surveys back in with those gradings we can get an idea of individuals's self improvement and in fact on the first pilot league, the first league that we piloted,  98 per cent of the league reported health improvements of some sort.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Each team has a coach who will take details about their weight, health and diet before every match. The aim is for the men to play at least two matches each week. \u003cbr/\u003e              Organisers say they already have sponsorship and support from some professional football teams.\u003cbr/\u003e              The men who play here are supported by Leyton Orient a professional club based in east London.\u003cbr/\u003e              The club ground is literally across the field.\u003cbr/\u003e              Man V Fat says the cost of joining is about twenty-five British pounds each month, which is on par with the cost of gym membership. \u003cbr/\u003e              In some parts of the country membership is free, as the scheme is incorporated into facilities provided by local health authorities.\u003cbr/\u003e              Member Dave Worley says he's always had problems with his weight and when he left university and started working he had even less time to do exercise. \u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"The real motivation for me was when I left uni at 21 seven years ago I was a lot, lot heavier, I was nearly a 135 kilos and so I've lost a lot of weight since then already, but things are just starting to creep back up a little bit at the start of the year so I took the steps to arrest that creeping back up and as I say it's been quite successful for me so far.\u003cbr/\u003e              Most of the men who come here say they enjoy football, but their weight makes it difficult to play in other leagues.\u003cbr/\u003e              Gurbakash Singh is new this season and he says: \"You look forward to it, you know, you look forward to it week to week,coming here, meeting the other lads, playing each other, you know they're looking at the league, who's top and you know who's bottom, yes we look forward to it.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Philip Smith is the head of health and well being at the Leyton Orient Trust.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says the club can also be an important conduit to other health services the men may need.\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Smith \"We only get a short window of time within our weekly sessions to discuss to discuss things, we've got the whatsApp group which is fantastic, being able to have a regular conversation and discussion with the group and wed post health messaging within this throughout the week and it really a support mechanism for the participants to be able to engage with each other.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              According to Man V Fat local authorities find it much harder to attract men to health and fitness services because the men are embarrassed to be in a mixed group.\u003cbr/\u003e              Smith says: \" I think the key thing is that it starts getting people back into activity first of all and then from that, it starts opening their horizons then to engaging with other services. They may not necessarily attend their GP, or the local fitness classes. but coming to play football is just a different in for them and from that then we start developing the relationship the relationship, the rapport and then from that we can build and support then further.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Douding says the trouble for most men is that: \"Once you leave school, college or places like that and college gets in the way, work and family and so on you don't find many opportunities to play competitive sport anymore and when you do you have to be either in a physically able to go and play ninety minutes of football, or you have to be good enough for a team. Whereas here you can turn up terrible at football and out of shape and still score goals every single week on the scales.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Under the floodlights there's no let up from the teams fighting to get fit as well as reaching the top of their league.\u003cbr/\u003e              In goal Doug Curtis is enjoying his match tonight. \u003cbr/\u003e              A father of two he was warned by his doctor that he had high blood pressure and was borderline diabetic. \u003cbr/\u003e              Curtis works night shifts and says his problem was consuming too much sugar.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says: \"It is hard, but retail is a physical job as well, trying to keep yourself awake during the night you just crave sugar, but I've sort of cut most of the sugar out.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              Curtis has lost five stones in weight and is planning to lose much more.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says two years ago, if anyone had told him he'd be playing football and losing so much weight he would have laughed at them.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now anything is possible.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              London, UK - 11 July 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
