The Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for Performing Arts in...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN: \u003cbr/\u003e              A new centre of excellence for the performing arts is opening in honour of the prolific film and opera director Franco Zeffirelli. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for Performing Arts in Zeffirelli's home town of Florence will display exhibits from the director's varied 70 year career as well as offering workshops and training courses in theatre, cinema and set design. \u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE: \u003cbr/\u003e              In a career spanning 70 years, Franco Zeffirelli has conquered opera, film, theatre and television. \u003cbr/\u003e              Born in Florence on February 12th, 1923, he started his career working as director's assistant for opera and theatre director, Luchino Visconti. \u003cbr/\u003e              He went on to become one of Italy's most important directors, excelling also in screen writing and set and costume design.\u003cbr/\u003e              Now in his home town, a centre dedicated to his work and his legacy is set to be opened to the public.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Caterina D'Amico is an artistic consultant at the  Zeffirelli Foundation in Florence. \u003cbr/\u003e              She says: \"The centre was built in response to a long-standing desire of Zeffirelli. it has been at least 30 years that he has been wondering what to do with all his work and all the material he has collected during his lifetime and, wanting to find a home for this material, where it could also be useful to other people, he dreamt of creating a foundation, a centre where young people could come to learn from his experience and make progress in their careers.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              As a theatre director, Zeffirelli staged the works of William Shakespeare, Edward Albee, Arthur Miller, Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo both in Italy and abroad. \u003cbr/\u003e              He directed the movies \"Jane Eyre\" (1996)\", \"Tea with Mussolini\" (1999), the television film \"Jesus of Nazareth\" (1977) and \"Callas Forever\" (2002) which was dedicated to Opera singer Maria Callas.\u003cbr/\u003e              There were also film adaptations of Shakespeare's  plays including  \"The Taming of the Shrew\" (1967) with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, \"Romeo and Juliet\" (1968), with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey and \"Hamlet\" (1990) with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close. \u003cbr/\u003e              Thanks to his work on the Shakespearian dramas, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon Zeffirelli an honorary knighthood as a Knight of the Order of the British Empire. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Another important aspect regarding Zeffirelli is that we have a person who, like very few other Italians, actually crossed the Italian border. He became famous first of all with his contribution to opera but also to theatre and cinema, in many countries around the world,\" says D'Amico. \u003cbr/\u003e              Curator of the museum, Carlo Centolavigna says the centre will show how Zeffirelli's style has changed over the years but remains solidly recognisable. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"His style was certainly innovative because he has experienced different trends and every piece had a very specific target, thus it was difficult to get confused, or not understand. It was very clear, for example, that that (piece) was Zeffirelli's \"Bohème\" or Zeffirelli's \"Aida\", his style was unique and magnificent at the same time.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              The centre is divided into three sections: an archive, containing notes, designs, scripts, screenplays, storyboards and photos dating back to the beginning of Zeffirelli's career until today; a Library, boasting around 10,000 books on art, history, literature, theatre; and a museum, hosting more than 250 of Zeffirelli's works, including drawings, pictures and sketches. \u003cbr/\u003e              In 1972 Zeffirelli started working on a movie based on the \"Inferno\", Dante Alighieri's masterpiece. The project didn't go through but some of the sketches are now on display in one hall of the centre, called \"Sala dell'inferno\" (Inferno's Hall).\u003cbr/\u003e              \"It is a very important centre not only because it will be a place (with the aim) to preserve, and therefore a museum with an archive, a library open to all, but it is important because it will be a centre for the dissemination of culture. I would like to regard it as a centre from which events are not only intended for the local area but would also have reverberations on a national and international level,\" says Francesco Ermini Polacci, co-director of Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for Performing Arts and curator of the musical activities of the Zeffirelli Foundation. \u003cbr/\u003e              Alongside the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions will be held. The centre also includes a music room with 120 seats, a bookshop and a restaurant. \u003cbr/\u003e              The aim of the new centre is to pass down Zeffirelli's heritage, promoting the study of theatre, cinema, costume design, direction and acting to younger generations.
