STORYLINE:    ...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eLEADIN:\u003cbr/\u003e              Representatives from Muslims and other religions across Italy are taking part in a course to help their communities better integrate into Italian society and assert their religious rights.\u003cbr/\u003e              STORYLINE:\u003cbr/\u003e              A recent influx of migrants from African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries has prompted Italy to adapt to the needs of its changing multi-cultural society. \u003cbr/\u003e              The Muslim community alone is estimated to number 1.6 million people in Italy. \u003cbr/\u003e              With integration in mind the Italian government has promoted a training in Italian law in the city of Ravenna. \u003cbr/\u003e              The aim is to fill the gap between religious communities and the state of Italy by addressing practical and legal issues and concerns, as well as facilitate a dialogue through religious community leaders. \u003cbr/\u003e              Course participants are Muslim, Sikh, Evangelical, Romanian-Orthodox Christians, among others. All of them are members of religious communities that haven't signed an official agreement with the state of Italy. \u003cbr/\u003e              Classes have been designed to help religious leaders deal with day-to-day matters by ensuring they act within the framework of Italy's human and religious rights legal system as well as offering practical advice on matters everything from mosque planning permission to divorce. \u003cbr/\u003e              Professor Giovanni Cimbalo teaches Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Bologna and is in charge of the training.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says the lessons concentrate on various aspects of religious freedom.\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Ours is basically an active citizenship course and the goal is to turn these students into a reference point for their own communities when it comes to tackling and facing problems (with Italian institutions),\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e              But there's another purpose to the training, Cimbalo adds. \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The goal of this course is to fight fundamentalism. Where does fundamentalism stem from? It occurs whenever a persons' needs aren't met.\"\u003cbr/\u003e              \"Sure, radicalism is partly rooted in ideology and fanaticism, but some people choose it out of necessity, because they don't feel represented, because they think feel interests aren't taken care of, they feel marginalised\", Cimbalo says. \u003cbr/\u003e              The 30 students originally come from countries such as Morocco, Yemen, Algeria, Albania, Jordan and other Asian and European countries. They now all live in cities and towns across Italy.\u003cbr/\u003e              All participants have been selected among 60 others by their own communities.\u003cbr/\u003e              The course started in May 2017; it initially focused on Italy's constitutional law before addressing topics such as marriage and divorce, the acquisition of Italian citizenship, the creation of religious associations as well as bioethical concerns.\u003cbr/\u003e              The July class focuses on places of worship and their construction, offering advice on how to navigate the often difficult Italian bureaucracy. \u003cbr/\u003e              Originally from Algeria, Abdelhafid Kheit is now the imam of Catania, the Sicilian city where he has been living for the past 23 years.\u003cbr/\u003e              He says classes provide a way for the Muslim community to assert its own place in Italy.  \u003cbr/\u003e              Federica Botti is the course coordinator and an Ecclesiastical Law researcher from the University of Bologna.\u003cbr/\u003e              She says the teachers are doing more than just imparting knowledge, they are also bridging a gap between state and religions, facilitating a dialogue among them.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"Our role is to act like a bridge between the (Interior) Ministry, that deals with different religions in Italy, and religious communities - to shed light on the latter's necessities and needs,\" Botti says.\u003cbr/\u003e              Noura Amzil was born in Morocco but the linguistic and cultural mediator now resides in the northern Italian city of Como. \u003cbr/\u003e              Amzil, who moved to Italy almost 20 years ago, believes this is an important time in history for the Muslim community\" in the country.  \u003cbr/\u003e              \"The Muslim community is currently attempting to engage in dialogue with the authorities, while asserting their Islamic identity and securing some rights,\" Amzil explains. \u003cbr/\u003e              The training has been organised and implemented by the Fondazione Flaminia (Flaminia Foundation) whose mission is the promotion and support of the Ravenna campus of the University of Bologna.\u003cbr/\u003e            \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e              Ravenna - 15 July 2017\u003cbr/\u003e              1.
