The success of the opposition's symbolic referendum will be measured by how many millions participate. Democratic Unity, a coalition of some 20 opposition parties, has printed 14 million ballots for voters inside and outside the country of 31 million people. Few expect turnout that high but analysts say participation by more than 8 million people would significantly hike pressure on the government.Supporters of the referendum hope to win enough turnout to undermine the validity of President Nicolas Maduro's constitutional assembly. The opposition says that plan is structured to pack the constitutional assembly with government supporters and allow Maduro to eliminate the few remaining checks on his power.Among those voting in Caracas was German Ferrer, a lawmaker in Maduro's party who has denounced the president's plans for the assembly.Ferrer is the husband of the country's attorney general Luisa Ortega Diaz who, despite being a member of Maduro's government, has been locked in a pitched battle with the president over his plans to revise the constitution. Although she could not vote in the ballot, opposition supporters cheered her as she entered her workplace on Sunday. Showing their support for the vote in the Venezuelan capital were the former presidents of Colombia and Mexico, Andres Pastrana and Vicente Fox, both of whom called for plans for the constitutional assembly to be abandoned. In neighbouring Colombia, members of the growing Venezuelan community also cast their ballots.
