But they are important to the ecosystem. In Nepal, one community has found a solution to the problem - vulture restaurants.STORYLINE:Welcome to the vulture restaurant... located in a remote area of south-central Nepal where there's a small farming village called Kawasoti. The community run restaurant is a way to provide carrion for endangered vultures in a safe and carefully managed way. These super scavengers may be regarded as messengers of death and doom, but in Asia, it is they who have suffered one of the natural world's greatest population crashes of recent times. This manmade \"vulture restaurant\" is part of efforts across Asia to save the critically endangered bird from extinction. Now there are tentative signs they may be paying off.Although vultures are seen as ugly and by some cultures as harbingers of bad luck, they're actually vital to keeping a delicate and healthy balance in the ecosystem.Because of their diet of carrion, vultures are known as nature's trash collectors.Their stomach acids eradicate diseases from the food chain.Saving vultures from extinction has become a lifelong mission for Dhan Bahadur 'DB' Chaudary, a conservationist, who devised the idea of a vulture restaurant with the support of Bird Conservation Nepal and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. DB grew up on the land in and around this area - right on the border of Chitwan National Park. It's a preserved area in the Terai Lowlands of Nepal, known for its Biodiversity. The vulture restaurant involves many members of the local community. Standing near the vulture restaurant feeding area DB says: \"As you can see we have prepared the cow for the vultures. People from the community have been preparing the vulture's food. We can see the vultures sitting in the surrounding trees. As soon as we serve the food they will come within a half hour. \"\"Farmers bring their old cows to the 'retirement home.' The vulture restaurant buys the cows for around 200 rupees ($2). The local community cares for them until they die of natural causes. DB says, \"We get cows from the villages. Farmers with whom we have shared the idea bring them to us. We buy them for Rs. 200. It is usually a relief for the farmers when we buy their cows from them. We hire local people to look after the animals. When these cattle finally meet their natural death, we place them at the restaurantafter we prepare them for the vultures.\"After the cows die they are prepared by community members and are then taken to a feeding zone that is maintained in a remote area. Within the feeding zone there is a cage in which some vultures are housed. The cages are part of the breeding programme designed to boost population numbers. Female vultures reach breeding age at five years old, but only produce one egg per year. 50% of the newborns will die once they leave the nest according to the Vulture Conservation Action Plan for Nepal. Community leaders from the local areas meet regularly to discuss how best to manage the vulture restaurant. They even hold education and outreach programs in the area to help locals understand the importance of vultures in nature but also in Hindu culture. The restaurant is named Jatayu in Nepali after the vulture god, who in Hindu mythology is depicted as fighting to free Sita, wife of the god-king Rama, from the clutches of a demon. This connection to religion has been important in advocacy campaigns in predominantly Hindu communities across Nepal. By the early 2000s, when the vulture crisis in South Asia was at its peak, scientists around the world were scrambling to find the source of the epidemic. Across the Indian subcontintent in two species (the slender billed and white rumped vultures) the population fell from 40 million to 11,000 in 15 years according to The Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society (JBNHS). The dramatic population crash of vultures across the Indian subcontinent led to an increase in crows, rats, and rabid dog populations, leopard attacks, and an overflow of rotting animal carcasses. The source of the decline turned out to be human and cattle carcasses that had been treated with a veterinary drug called diclofenac. It was causing vultures to die from kidney failure within 24 hours of consuming the infected carrion. Ishaana Thapa the Director of Bird Conservation Nepal says, \"We realized the reason behind the decline was diclofenac. In 2006 we were successful in banning diclofenac at the government level. Thereafter as an alternative to this drug, we introduced minocycline which didn't have side effects like Diclofenac. This medicine could be used for the safekeeping of animals and birds. The main success for us was to use minocycline instead of diclofenac and the other was to bring communities together to conserve the vultures.\" Although diclofenac was officially banned in Nepal in 2006 the problem persists.Alternatives are expensive, so some farmers continue to illegally treat cattle with the human form of the drug according to locals and the British RSPB. The plan is to build on the success of the vulture restaurant and develop Kawasoti as model village for conservation. Yam Bahadur Nepali, a community leader says, \"Thanks to the vulture restaurant the community has received training in fish farming, bee-keeping, driving, and this has played an important role in creating opportunity for this community.\" Tourists are welcomed to Kawasoti to watch vulture feeding time. Raju Mahato the owner of a local guesthouse says, \"It has helped with the economy. Since there is the vulture restaurant - a lot of tourists come here to stay. Those of us with homestays - like me - have benefitted. It's bringing a greater income for our village.\"Vulture populations in Nepal have seen a slow but steady increase - and it's due mainly to the opening of vulture restaurants like DB's across Nepal. This year the 13th National Annual Vulture Survey carried out by Bird Conservation Nepal found that the number of the critically endangered white-rumped vulture had increased by 36 in a year. But it's a long road back to normalcy for the planet's trash collectors. Some experts say we will never see vulture numbers rise to the pre-crisis numbers of 20 years ago when there were 50,000 vulture nests in Nepal. Two decades on there are barely 500 according to data from Birds of Nepal. As well as being a valuable conservation effort the restaurant also provides a stream of steady income for the community. DB is confident vulture populations will continue to slowly recover and he has a vision for the future. He says \"vultures are an important species - one that we cannot do without. At this point, we are working more towards sustaining the restaurant. We understand that we need to make this an example for Nepal, we need further develop this idea as eco-tourism. It shows us how a community's support can help to nurture and grown an idea. We want other countries to learn from it.
