Some Bauhaus buildings, in the eastern German cities of Dessau and Weimar, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996. Under consideration this year is a group of Bauhaus buildings known as Laubenganghaeuser, or “housing with balcony access”.STORYLINE:The Bauhaus school of architecture revolutionized architecture.Some Bauhaus buildings, in the eastern cities of Dessau and Weimar, were put on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996.Under consideration this year are buildings designed Hannes Meyer, who took over as director from Walter Gropius. The first site is a trade union school he designed in Bernau, north of Berlin.The yellow-brick school, built for the ADGB union in 1930, was designed by Meyer and colleague Hans Wittwer and is \"today still a paragon of functional architectural design, which is freely and thoughtfully integrated into its natural surroundings,\" according to the foundation that looks after it today.Friedemann Seeger of the ADGB Trade Union School says : \"Hannes Meyer was a leftist, radical formalist, whose concept of architecture was free of all artistic accessories, ornamentation or \"art in architecture\" (\"Kunst am Bau\"), so he built without using decorative additions to enrich his architecture. This housing estate, also designed by Meyer, in Dessau is considered an architectural treasure. Known as Laubenganghaeuser, meaning “housing with balcony access”, the five buildings were first occupied in 1930. They feature 90 apartments arranged in rows on three levels, each only 48 square meters (517 sq. feet), reflecting Meyer's focus on making Bauhaus designs more affordable but yet still comfortable and maintaining the same aesthetic, explains  Monika Markgraf, monument conservator at Bauhaus Dessau Foundation: \"The architecture of these houses is exceptional, and it differs a little from the architecture of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. The goal to build apartments affordable for people with very small income as well was very important to him.\"\"They are very small, precisely laid-out apartments of 48 square meters, that are very well organized,\" she says. \"They are oriented so the living rooms facing south will get a lot of sunlight, and the side rooms like the kitchen, hallway and bathroom are to the north, so it's very functional.\"Also under consideration by UNESCO for World Heritage status from Germany is an archaeological site with art dating to the Ice Age caves in the western state of Baden-Wuerttemberg;  the Naumburg Cathedral and surrounding high medieval cultural landscape southwest of Leipzig, and the ancient beech forests that also sprawl over several over European countries.The committee is considering 25 other cultural sites from around the world, seven natural sites, and one considered mixed.
