The highly anticipated sit-down comes when relations between the two nations are at a low point.Trump has shown reluctance to adopt a harder line toward Russia amid conclusions by multiple US intelligence agencies that Moscow meddled in the 2016 presidential election to benefit Trump, and there are continuing federal and congressional investigations into possible collusion between Trump campaign associates and Russian government officials.For Putin, the meeting with Trump offers a long-sought opportunity to negotiate a rapprochement with Washington, but the swirling controversy over Trump campaign's ties with Russia will loom over the talks, making any agreements unlikely.Rarely in recent history has a meeting of two heads of states generated so much excitement, anxiety and hope.Edward Lozansky, President of Moscow's American University said on Monday that the various recent tensions between the two countries have created a situation from which \"any little spark which can blow up and things get really bad.\"He was speaking at the unveiling of a statue depicting a handshake between former US President Ronald Reagan and the former General Secretary of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev.Lozansky contrasted Trump's position to that Reagan whose popularity at home, he believes, gave him considerable room for manouvre in his relationship with his Soviet counterpart.The Kremlin views Friday's encounter as a watershed that could ease Russia-West tensions, while some in the US worry that Trump could make unjustified concessions to Russia.Amid the claims of collusion with Moscow, any deal with Putin would expose Trump to more criticism. \"Any movement from Trump towards Putin, towards Russia, immediately generates an avalanche of criticism and screams of betrayal, treason,\" said Lozansky.Suzanne Massie, a former advisor to Ronald Reagan on Russia, was also attending Monday's unveiling.She expressed the hope that Trump and Putin manage to find some common ground when they finally meet.\"That's what we have to hope for - that they find some basis for intelligent conversation.
