STORYLINE: Thousands of the luckiest tennis fans with tickets to Wimbledon will be able to see their heroes on the tennis courts, but over the next eleven days millions more around the world will be watching through digital outlets and television.Tucked away from the glare of the sunshine, the courts and the crowds are IBM's technology rooms, or the bunker as people here refer to it.Scores of staff are watching, logging and checking every move of almost every player. Computers are analysing the crowd participation from excitement to disappointment.Masses of data is being collected so that Wimbledon can draw up a profile of what makes the best ever Wimbledon player, taking into account psychology, as well as ability and track record.Wimbledon first introduced computers to the tournament 28 years ago.IBM's Sam Seddon says:\"We started out with the very simple objective of putting some tennis statistics onto the TV graphics for centre court, since then that's expanded to speed of serves and things that now people generally expect, and now we've got artificial intelligence systems helping deliver insights to the fans. So the scale of change has been astronomical.\"This year with Wimbledon the company has created a mobile app called Ask Fred, named after the UK's famous player and Wimbledon champion Fred Perry.Fans can use it to find centre court, the toilets or work out where they want to eat lunch. The plan for the future is that fans at the event can access information about every point scored by their favourite player without having to be courtside. In the bunker there are also computers which can examine how players are matched, as well as how they recover in particular situations like a break of serve, or a tie. The analysis will enable the fans to predict how close the match will be.It will also enable them to work out which matches they actually want to see, which will be the most exciting.Seddon says: \"Watson (the name of the central Wimbledon computer) is able to take a particular use case and understand and learn from that every time, so the information we're capturing from the fans in terms of Ask Fred (phone app) will help Watson understand what our fans are interested in so we can tailor some of our digital platforms from a visual image recognition point of view, it's able to recognise this particular gesticulation with hands is anger, or this particular gesticulation is happiness and excitement and learn over time so that can help the video editor say we want all those moments where players are particularly excited.\"Chief technology officer Stephen Hammer explains : \"So I'll just go to this clip here, so we're analysing the volume in the content as a prefilter to help determine significant points. Action recognition is something else that we're monitoring, so we're looking for physical signs of players celebrating after a point concludes, so things like, arms up in the air, fist pumps things like that. And then also crowd cheering as well so we train the system to look for those things and that helps us identify key points in a match.\"It's all come a long way from expecting the line judges to make call on balls and nets.On centre court former tennis professionals are now engaged to be able to give real time data on various aspects of the match feeding IBM's Watson with hundreds of facts in minutes.Looking to the future Wimbledon wants to widen it's attraction.A lot of the technology will enable people thousands of miles away from the ground to see everything that's going on, whether it's on centre court or at the practice nets where the public aren't actually allowed to go. Alexandra Willis is head of digital communications at the All England Tennis Club. She says: \"Hopefully the ambition of creating an immersive experience is that someone gets to understand Wimbledon a bit better, they want to come back for more, they want to learn more, explore more through the statistics and insight they have and a really good example of this is that the practice courts where we put in this 360 (degree) technology that isn't just a 2D feed it's actually something that people can look around they can explore they can understand who's practicing and it's also bringing to life an area that they haven't previously been able to see.\"The tournament ends of July 16th with the men's single final.London, UK - 4 July 20171.
