It's the grand setting for a unique exhibition: an array of traditional, intricate, colourful carpets from the Caucasus and beyond.?For centuries, the Azerbaijani people of Georgia wove intricate rugs. Once a world-renowned rug-weaving region, today that tradition has all but vanished.?According to the reWoven project, only around 20 women from an estimated 500,000 Azerbaijanis living in Georgia today are actively weaving.?That's why the project is aiming to preserve and revive carpet-weaving traditions in the southern Caucasus region. As part of the festival, the reWoven project has invited a selection of international weavers to demonstrate their skills and show a collection of old and new carpets. ?Ryan Smith oversees the reWoven project in Georgia's eastern region of Marneuli. ?Smith says vivid colours, thick yarn and red weft distinguish Gazakh carpets. ?\"All these carpets would be classified as Gazakh carpets or as they often write as Kazakh, but it's not from Kazakhstan, it's from Azerbaijan, from the Caucasus,\" says Smith. ?\"And the distinguishing features is that they use a red weft so the yarn that's going across between each row of knots is red and also it's very thick yarn, so it's not a high knot count it is a low knot count. ?\"But very simple geometric designs.\"?Here in the festival's Georgia pavilion, experts are displaying an array of carpets from several of the country's regions.?Some of the best known are these Tushetian carpets, famous for their black and white design.?\"One design you can find in all people's art, but they have different techniques and materials and taste. And you can recognise immediately,\" says Irina Koshoridze from Georgia's state museum of folk and applied art.?\"For example, Tushetian carpet, it's impossible to mix with another, it's black and white. Only Tushetian carpets are black and white and with this white linear features, which are typical for Tusheti.\"?Tjsibhai Dhanabhai Harijan travelled all the way from Kolkata, India to demonstrate his weaving skills.?He says carpet weaving has undergone several changes over the centuries, but the most important traditions – the colours and hand weaving - have stayed the same. ?\"We make carpets from camel wool and goat wool. We are hand spinning wool, dying and weaving. The entire process is natural,\" he says. ?\"It is all traditional methods, no machines, no chemicals, all is completely handmade.\"?Dinara Chochunbaeva, from the United Nations' cultural agency, UNESCO, has brought these Kyrgyz carpets to Georgia. ?Traditional Kyrgyz felt carpets were inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2012, meaning they're considered in urgent need of safeguarding.?\"Carpet ornaments from the Turkish world are very much alike. You can read the ornaments like a book,\" says Chochunbaeva.?\"The distinguishing feature is that we are showcasing felt carpets. The most common types of carpets in Kyrgyzstan are carpets from felt.\"Kyrgyz weaving dates back centuries and is linked to the everyday life of nomads, who used felt carpets to warm and decorate their homes. ?But nowadays there are fewer and fewer weavers crafting traditional Kyrgyz rugs. The organisers are hoping that celebrating these specialist skills can help to preserve the craft of carpet weaving for the future.Akhaltsikhe, Georgia - 30 June 2017??1.
