He received the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award in recognition of his commitment to helping others with the addiction recovery process.Clayton has been sober for more than two decades. \"My band mates have held me up the whole way through this process. We've been together for 40 years, and you know, I guess they loved me before I knew how to love myself. So it's really important that they share this with me,\" Clayton said.U2 was also set to perform, and arrived at the end of the red carpet to pose with Clayton for photographers.As for the honor, Clayton feels it goes beyond him as an individual.  \"It's great to be honored in this way, but it's not really about me. It's really about what MAP does to support anybody in our industry, any musician or road crew person that is struggling with addiction. There's an epidemic of opioid addiction at the moment, and MusicCares as a group and a charity really provides funding for a lot of people to look into those things and find help,\" Clayton said.The band is now on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album \"The Joshua Tree\" by playing it in its entirety. It just so happens that they play the New York area later this week. So what came first: the honor or the tour dates? Clayton wouldn't say.\"You know, MusicCares have been trying to encourage me to come and do this. We're recording a record, we've been recording a record for a couple of years, and it just seemed right that I could do this at this time, you know, it's just the planets aligned,\" he said. As for bringing back \"The Joshua Tree,\" Clayton feels it's better the second time around.\"I think we're been playing the songs a lot better now. I think when we, when 'Joshua Tree' first kind of burst on the scene, you know, it was a very, very big year for us. We were playing the shows. We were making a film. We couldn't really enjoy the quality of what we had done. Now we are revisiting those songs, and it's as if the audience is really showing us how important those songs are. We're loving it,\" Clayton said.The original four members of the band have been together 40 years. So before going inside, Clayton simply explained how they made it work for so long.\"The work, and the quality of the work, has always held us together, and we've learned a lot of tolerance along the way,\" Clayton said. The MusiCares Foundation -- an affiliated charity of the Recording Academy -- provides members of the music community access to addiction recovery treatment. The foundation offers programs and services to members of the music community for addiction recovery treatment and sober living resources.New York, 26 June 20171.
