STORYLINE:Martin Ogando savours the time he and his 91-year-old grandmother can look through family photographs.The pleasure is all the more precious because Ogando did not know of her existence until eighteen months ago.He discovered that his real parents were among the political dissidents who were among those who 'disappeared' during Argentina's dictatorship.Ogando only found out about his parents after a DNA test in November 2015 confirmed his true identity.He will never know his mother, or father, but he can see who they were in his grandmother Delia Giovanola's family album.The photos show a clear resemblance between 39 year old Ogando and his father. The men share the same skin tone and blue eyes, they also share the same genes. Ogando explains how he found out who he was: \"They said: you've gotten your blood tested, I'm calling you to confirm that this test result was positive. I couldn't believe it. You are from the Montesano Ogando family, you have a granny who's here with us, they said. She has been looking for you since years. You also have an aunt who is twin to your (missing) mother. Your mother's name was Stella, your father's Jorge.\"The tests showed Ogando was the biological son of Jorge Ogando and Stella Maris Montesano.He was born during their captivity in a clandestine detention centre and taken away from his parents who were never seen again after 1976.Ogando says: \"They put my grandmother on the phone and she said - Hi Martin. It was odd for me because I had been Diego all my life. So she called me Martin, it was weird but of course I understood because for a life-time she had looked for me under the name my parents chose for me, Martin.\"He says: \"Obviously I haven't met my parents, I would've loved to know them.  According to my grandmother I resemble my father, she says that when I walk, I walk the same way as him. I walk in a particular way that my grandma says it's my father's.\"Between 1976 and 1983 Argentina's ruling military junta launched a systematic plan to steal babies born to political prisoners. Delia Giovanola was among the women who founded the protest movement called the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.They established the human rights group to find their stolen grandchildren which has led advances in DNA identification. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Argentina's National Genetic's Bank, the first of its kind in the world.The genetic bank was created in 1987 with help from scientists around the world.It became a global forerunner when it created a database with samples of families searching for kidnapped children, as well as samples of adults who suspected they may be among the children stolen from the victims of the military.About 100 people like Ogando, are tested each month.\"The bank is the first successful case of a State creating a DNA bank through a law, to repair crimes against humanity formerly perpetrated by the State itself,\" says Mariana Herrera, who heads the genetic bank. Many of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo are now grandmothers.The Genetic Bank's 30th birthday was commemorated with a reunion at the former Naval School of Mechanics.During military rule it was used as an extermination camp by the dictatorship, now it's a symbol of freedom and it's called the Remembrance and Human Rights Centre.\"The Grandmothers gave us geneticists the opportunity to redeem a science that was linked to genocide, slavery and racism,\" says Victor Penchaszadeh, a Bank co-founder and geneticist who was exiled in the U.S when he first contacted the Grandmothers in 1982.During the dictatorship years, the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo put their lives on the line in their fight to recover their children and grandchildren.Each week they would march silently in front of the main square in Buenos Aires. They also traveled around the globe in search of the experts to find out if it was possible to determine the parenthood of the stolen babies in the absence of the parents, or their blood samples.The Grandmothers helped U.S. geneticists advance the use of mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only from mothers, to identify individuals. This has been vital to the cause of finding the abducted children of those killed by the military.It meant that even if their mothers had disappeared, the surviving grandmothers could use their DNA to identify the missing children.Delia has never given up hope finding new children. \"Now we are looking for the ones that are still missing,\" she says. To date, 122 cases of stolen children have been resolved, but several hundred remain unaccounted for. The Bank, a world authority in this matter, is presently assisting Colombia, Peru and El Salvador finding their disappeared.It's also assisted the families of the young women stolen by militant Islamists Boko Haram in Nigeria.Herrera says: \"The Bank has such a symbolic transcendence not only for Argentina but for the world, that is why is so important for us to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
