Various of Dead SeaLEADIN:Scientists in Jordan say a mega drought that devastated the Middle East thousands of years ago is set to return. Evidence found inside bubbles trapped in salt below the Dead Sea predicts another mega drought heading for the area at some point during this century. The findings point to a bleak future for the Middle East where the water in the Dead Sea watershed that is currently used by Israel, Palestine and Jordan might vanish completely. STORYLINE:The air vibrates with heat along the lowest point on Earth 430 metres or 1,412 feet deep below sea level. This is the shoreline of the Dead Sea near the Wadi Zarqa Ma'in canyon in Amman, Jordan. The water glitters in the hot sun, the shores are rimmed with sharp salt crystals. But the salt lake is slowly shrinking – losing a metre of depth a year – as climate change and human water consumption deplete its resources. Geologists from Jordan, Israel and the United States are collecting preliminary samples from ravines and waterfalls across the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. Ancient clues buried in mud, rock and salt just might help these scientists learn more about the future of this area - that many believe will likely be even more arid than it is today. While the western side of the Dead Sea in Israel is well-studied. The team here hopes to fill in what they describe as \"the blank map\" of Jordan with geological data that can help them explain when and how the Dead Sea has grown in the past.Yael Kiro, a geochemist at the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory says:\"We want to learn what's going on in the Dead Sea in terms of how much water from the eastern side and what is the composition of water and what is the composition of sediments. We can't understand without this the changes that we see in the Dead Sea and therefore we can't understand the climate without knowing what is going on here.\"Kiro lead a Dead Sea drilling project in 2010 along with fellow geologists, Moti Stein and Stephen Goldstein.A floating drill discovered evidence of cyclical growth and shrinkage of the salt lake. At times it stretched to the Golan Heights; other times mega droughts devastated the watershed and drove the Dead Sea 100 metres deeper than it is today. When water flows downhill it carries with it soil, salt, trees and other detritus like animal carcasses. Over thousands of years this material forms layers coloured by its contents – ashen white for dry summers and dark grey for fertile winters. Geologists can read the history in these bands of colour – and use sophisticated laboratory experiments to discover intricate details of changes of climate 200,000 years ago until today.\"Now we are with our partners and colleagues from Columbia University to study and sample different water resources from the eastern part of the Dead Sea and besides that we are sampling rocks and different soil profiles to see any indicators of the paleoclimate which is the climate thousands of years ago to have a clear idea about what was the climate, what is the climate now, and then we can forecast the future climate of the Dead Sea area,\" says Marwan al-Raggad, a hydrologist at the University of Jordan.\"Our main objective is to study the climate in the area and to see how the climate affects the Dead Sea and for sure if the climate is affecting the Dead Sea it will affect the ecosystem it will effect the whole community of the area in the Middle East and Northern Africa areas that is contributing to the Dead Sea areas.\"Goldstein is a geochemist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. He has studied the Dead Sea for 30 years. He says the history buried in the salt and rock raises a warning of devastating drought likely to return to the region. Roughly 80 percent of the Dead Sea's water vanished in the last mega drought, according to Goldstein, and the same amount is already gone from the watershed because of human activity.Their findings have led them to believe that the water now used by Israel, Palestine and Jordan from the Dead Sea watershed will likely disappear during the next mega drought – a phenomenon predicted to happen this century by climate models. \"What happened in the past tells us something about what is possible in the future. And what happened in the past in this area is that the water that people are using now and need now stopped running,\" says Goldstein. ====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
