After the liberation of the west coast (he meant the eastern coast) and parts of the right coast (western coast), we started to work on this route once again. Car driving through barrier and leaving garageLEADINSince the Islamic State group were driven out of much of Mosul, a vital highway has been brought back to life.The route, which links the capital Baghdad to Mosul, was closed for two years but is now safe and open to traffic again.STORYLINEAlawi garage in central Baghdad bustles with activity. Taxi drivers call out for passengers wishing to travel to Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city after the capital.However during the more than two year occupation by the Islamic State group of much of Mosul, scenes like this were a distant memory since the route between the two cities was deemed unsafe for travel.Back in June 2014, IS militants began attacking Mosul when they swept across northern and central Iraq, declaring an Islamic caliphate in the areas under their control in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. Iraq launched a massive operation to retake the city last October, and has driven the militants from all but a handful of neighbourhoods.Since the removal of the group, this vital highway, which links the capital with the country's north and mainly Mosul, has been brought back to life. And with it Alawi garage, one of the main transport hubs to the north, is back in business.\"The road to Mosul was closed for two years because of Daesh. Thank God, the eastern side is liberated now, the road to Mosul is safe and open for traffic,\" says one taxi driver,  Hassan Ali, as he prepares for his four hour journey to Mosul. Among the regular passengers is Mohammed Zaghir, a member of the government-sanctioned paramilitary forces, known as Popular Mobilisation Forces, an umbrella group that is made up mainly from Shiite militias. \"I am with Hashed al-Shaabi (Arabic for PMF), I used to travel (to Mosul) by plane because of Daesh, god damn them. Now, I travel by car, the road from Baghdad to Mosul is totally secured. Thank God for that,\" he says.The line to Mosul was officially opened in November, but was only for the members of the security forces according to Station Manager Hussein Ouda. Two months later, civilians were allowed to use it. Ouda says up to 15 taxis now leave every day for Mosul.\"When Daesh entered Mosul the (Baghdad-Mosul) line was completely stopped. After the liberation of the west coast (he means eastern coast) and parts of the right coast (western coast), we started to work on this line once again. The line is currently working day and night, thank God for that,\" he says.US-backed Iraqi forces are now pushing into Mosul's Old City, the last IS stronghold in the final major battle of an eight-month campaign.
