So it is beneficial on all fronts.\"22.Enos Mafokate and the Soweto Equestrian Centre pupils leaving the ring after performanceLEADINA 73 year old man from Soweto has devoted his life to teaching local children the art of horse gymnastics.Enos Mafokate was one of the first black international show jumpers - and he wants to help youngsters achieve similar success.STORYLINESoweto was the scene of a violent rebellion by the black school pupils against the apartheid government in 1976.But in a horse paddock on a sunny day more than four decades later, the mood in this Soweto town couldn't be more different.A young boy balances on the back of a white stallion named Vukuzenzel, practising for a competition in the gymnastic art of horse vaulting. His 73-year-old teacher Enos Mafokate, grips the stallion's reins in his left hand and gently flicks a whip with his right as the young man puts his arms out to keep balance.Mafokate was the first black man to compete at the Royal International Horse Show in London, United Kingdom in 1980. He now dedicates his life to teaching children to ride and care for horses at his Soweto Equestrian Centre.\"What I am doing here, I am giving back to these children because I want to see a black child competing the same as a white child, not to be pushed in because he is black,\" he says. The children arrive at 6am on a Saturday morning. Their first task it to clean the stables and then to groom the horses. The lessons only start once they have completed their tasks. On Wednesday Mafokate dedicates his time to teaching horse riding to disabled children. Horses, Mafokate says, have a way of calming young people who have been traumatised and of giving confidence and focus to those with social problems. He's also dedicated to the welfare of the horses and teaching children the importance of caring for animals.\"And the horse is how we get them to care for the animal. This came with me when I signed the contract with the SPCA (Speak, Protect \u0026 Care for Animals). I added more things, because horses were very, very, very badly neglected in Soweto when I started (the centre) in 1988.\"Mafokate's commitment to helping youngsters achieve equestrian success is paying off: \"We are the South African champions in vaulting four times,\" he explains. But it's not all about winning medals. Pupils say attending the Soweto Equestrian Centre helps boost their confidence too:\"When I first got on a horse it was actually the most comfortable place I have ever actually been, because I actually used to be a very nervous, anxious kid growing up, but I actually had a yearning to do more, but when you are on a horse there is just something that makes you feel like you just belong there and it is OK to be where you are,\" says eighteen year old pupil, Imogen Boemo Makgalemele. She adds that she thinks horse vaulting helps young people find foundation and stay out of trouble:\"Because thinking about it you are actually away from the streets most of the time,\" she says. \"You don't have time for anything else.\"Mafokate won his first riding competition in 1963, but apartheid segregation laws prevented him from taking part in further competitions until 1975.Once he was allowed to compete, Mafokate would break down one racial barrier after the next.He became the first black member of the Transvaal Horse Society in Johannesburg, and the first black rider in the 127-year history of the club to compete in the Pietermaritzburg Royal Agricultural Horse Show in the KwaZulu-Natal province in 1978.A British rider, spotted Mafokate competing in Cape Town in the late 1970s. A sponsor was found and in 1980 Mafokate became the first black man to compete internationally as a show jumper, coming fifth out of 31 riders at the Wembley Royal International Horse Show. The accolades poured in in the years ahead as Mafokate won one tournament after the next.He remembers meeting Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, with a baby Prince William in her arms, at a polo tournament in 1982.Years later he met South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela, whose philosophy of forgiveness and reconciliation Mafokate still clings to.It was in the 1990s, after seeing how poorly animals were being treated in Soweto that he decided to give horse-riding lessons. His mission, he says, was to send a message to people that animals deserve to be loved. In 2006 the municipality donated 28 acres of land outside of Soweto to him. Mafokate went to work and turned it into a training centre with a paddock and stables for his 20 horses. He's now as famous for his work with children as he was for his professional show jumping career:\"I probably met Enos in 2012, so 5 years odd ago and he has always been very instrumental in equestrian sport and bringing his kids from Soweto to our vaulting shows. And year after year we see him with different kids and the joy on these kids' faces is actually what makes our lives so much… it puts so much into our sport that we actually just love having him at our shows,\" says Michelle Blaauw, President of the Gauteng Horse Vaulting Association, a regional horse vaulting organisation.Over the past ten years Mafokate has trained hundreds of horse riders from around the world, most of them children.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
