Hard to believe GIFs have been around that long-- since they seem to have more recently exploded on social media-- but they started in a much more simple form on the internet in the late 1980's. \"It was invented in 1987 by a guy named Steve Wilhite and he invented the format to get images to render on the internet. In 1989 they were made to move. In about the early nineties, mid-nineties; they started looping and that's the format that we're stuck with today,\" said Adam Leibsohn, the COO of GIPHY, one of the most popular GIF making companies. But they've transcended technical imaging and become a modern form of communication. \"….We actually work with all of the television networks, all the movie studios, sports leagues, and music labels to make sure that that content's available on GIPHY and searchable. And so then you can use them as little ways to express yourself.\" Leibsohn said. Leibsohn says this quick expressive way of delivering culturally relevant content to mobile devices and or chat and messaging apps, has been crucial to the company's growth.  \"Now since technology is everywhere, there's so much bandwidth; everyone's got a little screen and super computer in their pocket. You're seeing people use visual things to communicate rather than words and GIFs are really the ultimate form of expression and communication for this mobile and sort of connected era.\"Although GIFs only play out for a matter of seconds, the action graphics have an impact that reaches outside of the digital world, just ask GIPHY artist Julie Winegard. \"Last year, GIPHY named my 'Obama Mic Drop' the number one GIF of 2016 which gave me exposure everywhere and you know, people reposting and posting it and that give me a lot of freelance work from that GIF.\"As social media continues to become a mainstay in daily pop culture consumption and with the 30 year tenure GIFs have had, it looks like GIFs are here to stay. If you wanna say something funny and you want to pull it out of a TV show and you want to use a little bit from 'Friends' or you want to use something from 'Game of Thrones'; we actually work with all of the television networks, all the movie studios, sports leagues, and music labels to make sure that that content's available on GIPHY and searchable. So, our brand has gotten so big we're getting a lot of inbound interests. For instance, Paul McCartney's team did contact us and say they wanted a presence on GIPHY because, they noticed we're sharing maybe two billion GIFs a day; maybe more and out of that they wanted to make sure that Paul McCartney GIFs were well represented. And so they asked for our help and so we've got technology from our whole tech team, our editorial team, to our arts team and our curators to actually take a lot of footage from McCartney's team, turn it into GIFs, and then distribute it out to our network.\"8. Memes are a lot of what GIFs are used for and a lot of those memes are derived from pop culture. So, from TV shows and from movies. There are a number of reasons one, is that it autoplays so as soon as it hits a browser it's already gonna start playing as soon as the viewer sees it. Another reason is they're small and they can travel really fast so people can put them on their Facebook, their Twitter, their own websites.
