Member states hope the SESAME project will boost scientific discovery and open a window to a better future for a region beset by war, boycotts and closed borders. STORYLINE:This is the home of some of the Middle East's most advanced scientific equipment. And it will soon be home to some of the region's best scientific brains too.The SESAME International Research Centre will launch its operations in the autumn.But an advance party of scientists is already here.The centrepiece of SESAME is a synchrotron light source - essentially a powerful microscope - that fills a large hangar.The contraption zaps electrons through a circular tube at close to the speed of light, generating intense light beams. Researchers can train these \"beam lines\" on their subject of study, from cells to materials.Palestinian accelerator physicist Maher Attal says it can be used across a wide range of disciplines.\"In medicine, engineering, material science, physics and chemistry, archaeology, the food industry, nanotechnology, micro-technology, and a lot of scientific research which will benefit from this project,\" he says.  The centre is all the more remarkable because it brings together people from countries which are often at loggerheads.Palestinians, Israelis, Iranians and others will conduct experiments side by side here.\"It's possible to collaborate with each other, even we have different opinions on different subjects like politics or religious, but we can come together for some specific points,\" says Hossein Khosroabadi, an Iranian beam line optics scientist.It has cost 100 million US dollars to build the first phase of the centre though it is still missing a dormitory, offices and a cafeteria.The idea to forge meaningful scientific contacts in the Middle East came from scientists involved with CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, one of the first European joint-venture organisations established after the devastation of World War II.CERN dwarfs SESAME in many ways, including with a particle accelerator that at 27 kilometres (16.8 miles) is more than 200 times longer than the one in Jordan.But the idea of science as a tool for breaking down barriers is central to both.And there are hopes it will open doors for more women in science.Egyptian infrared beam line scientist Gihan Kamel is the only female in the advance party.\"The more (women) we have, the greater the trust, the more they'll be convinced that truly, the Arab women, regardless of their religion or their beliefs, can accomplish something like this,\" she says.The centre has already had to navigate disagreements between nations.Israel threatened to walk out when the Palestinians demanded to be listed in the charter as \"state of Palestine,\" in line with a 2012 UN General Assembly upgrade of their status at the world body. Arab member stations persuaded the Palestinians to hold off in order not to endanger the project, according to the director of SESAME.And Iranian physicist Massoud Ali Mohammed was assassinated by a motorcycle bomb outside his Tehran home in January 2010, several days after attending a SESAME council meeting in Jordan. Despite the fallout, including Iran blaming the US and Israel, the next council meeting was held six months later.Khaled Toukan, President of Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, Director of SESAME, says the Arab world has \"wasted\" its capabilities in the past but thinks SESAME will improve its scientific standing.He says the aim is to create a centre that is \"progressive and unique\".The trick will be to keep all member counties working together, in spite of tensions outside of the science laboratory.\"Yes, there are nations that are conflicted politically, such as Turkey and Cyprus, Iran and Israel, Israel, of course and the Arab nations and the Palestinian authorities,\" says Toukan.But he says the centre has been created \"regardless of the political conflicts that currently ravage the region\".The first two beam lines are due to start operating in November - eventually two dozen lines will be available.Dozens of researchers have already applied for 'beam time'.The current members of SESAME are Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority, and Turkey.Allan, Jordan - 6 June 20171.
