That includes Amsterdam-based dancer and choreographer Marthe Vangeel.\"Being here, for me, is like being aware that I'm part of something bigger than just dancing,\" she says. \"I'm aware that it's about development, it's about changing lives, it's about giving opportunities and I can feel that Latin America it's something very, very different than anything else in the world.\"The festival was started by Peruvian dancer Vania Masias back in 2012.Having worked abroad in ballet in Ireland and London, and received offers to be part of the world-famous Cirque de Soleil, at 25 years old, she decided to return home to Peru.Having seen the talent of self-taught dancers begging for money on Peru's streets, Masais went on to found D1 in 2005.The dance school offers opportunities to people on low incomes to perhaps fulfill their dreams and become professional dancers themselves.\"To me, dancing gave me the tools to get ahead in life, to be okay and I said; 'What would happen if I gave a little of those tools to these kids who don't really have anything?\" says Masias. \"And who have left school to be working at a traffic light (doing acrobatics for tips) what would happen?' All of this happened. And here we are.\"This year's festival is welcoming renowned US choreographer Jamel Brown, also known as 'Loose Joint'. He's worked with artists including Jay-Z, Mariah Carey and Will Smith.There are also various dance competitions and rap battles.\"I feel that the Pura Calle festival started as something small and that small thing has expanded around the world,\" says dance competitor Imillitay Orihuela Lopez.\"We have a lot of people from around the country, it's a feeling that you get inside and want to show, it's culture.\"The signs are promising, the festival is now supported by organisations such as the United Nations, CAF - Development Bank of Latin America and Peru's Ministry of Tourism.Aside from helping the country's disadvantaged youth, Masais believes the festival promotes Peru's unique take on urban dance - fused with local traditional styles to create something unique.\"We believe that the Pura Calle Festival is 100 percent Peruvian,\" she says. \"We need to position Peru in the world, all young people like urban culture, they like urban dance, but what about, for example, with our own style, our folk law, our Huaylash (traditional Peruvian dance)?\"So, what we are doing is a fusion, so we do house with Huaylash, we do hip hop with Festejo (Afro-Peruvian dance), we do Afro-Peruvian stomping and we put a little popping, so that is generating our own style and that's going to make that thousands of people visit our wonderful country.\"Lima's 'Pura Calle' festival of urban culture ran 2-4 June in the city's Park of the Exposition.Lima, Peru - 4 June 20171. And I thought, 'here's an opportunity', and I decided at 25 to undertake a pilot (programme) that really gave the youth the structure that dance gave to me.
