Various of young girls and women from traditional fishing families rehearsing for a dance performance for an upcoming festival, man singingLEADIN Delegates at the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference are expected to call for action to safeguard marine life and reverse the damage which is threatening lives, jobs and economies everywhere.A small fishing community on India's west coast is currently learning to tackle the impact of years of overfishing and marine pollution by changing the way they fish, taking up sustainable crab farming and preserving marine diversity.STORYLINE: Sindhudurg, named after an old fort, is one of India's 11 ecologically-critical habitats along the coastline because of its rich marine biodiversity and mangrove beds.About three hours drive from Goa, the region is also a major fish landing centre and home to more than 350 marine species including Indian Ocean dolphins, coral reefs and Olive Ridley turtles.Fisherman and trawler operator John Gabriel Naronha has known for a while that he has been fishing in some very troubled waters.Coming from a traditional fishing family, he has expanded his business and has acquired six trawlers to increase his fish catch. He says the fish stock in the sea has been steadily declining over the past few years, forcing his boats to go further into deeper waters in search of fish.A project started by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2011 introduced him to the new square mesh nets that only catch the big fish, allowing smaller, juvenile fish to survive. The Sindhudurg project runs in partnership with the government of India and is supported by the Global Environment Facility.UNDP team member Rohit Sawant demonstrates the difference between the old and the new nets and how the square net helps in preserving fish breeding habitat and maintaining fish population.\"This is the diamond shaped net that was being traditionally used by the fishermen and what we see inside is the square mesh net which is blue in color. Here we can see that the juveniles who have escaped from the square mesh net – which is blue in color again – have royally been caught in the diamond shaped net,\" he explains. The gaps in the traditional diamond-shaped nets compress while in water, leaving no room for the smaller fish to escape. On an average catch of 18 kilograms, UNDP estimates that the square mesh allows over 3 kilograms of juvenile fish and other aquatic creatures to escape. Since 2015, every trawler in Sindhudurg district has been using square mesh nets. The change did not come easily, it took nearly two years before the fishermen and the district authorities were convinced of the difference a simple change in the fishing technique could make. The UNDP team shared evidence and studies with the local community to demonstrate the benefits of using the square net which was tested at least 100 times in different locations.\"When the small fish grows up, the fishermen can really benefit from it. If you look at these (pointing to the big-size fish), we can get good price for big fish. And the small fish gets a chance to grow and then we can get it. This square size net that we are using, it a blessing for us fishermen.\" Naronha says, adding that the new nets also help in saving diesel used to operate the trawlers. The world's oceans support the livelihoods of an estimated one in ten people on the planet, including some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable, according to the United Nations.40 per cent of the oceans are heavily affected by human activity, including through pollution, over-fishing and loss of coastal habitats. Efforts to conserve the enormous biodiversity wealth of the coastal areas and to maintain the health of the seas are urgently needed, says Marina Walter, the Deputy Country Director for United Nations Development Programme in India. \"The oceans of the planet are in dire need of urgent action. As you probably know 97 percent of planet's waters are in oceans and very often the consequences of contaminated oceans, of troubled oceans – you don't see them, they are under water,\" she says.Around 90 per cent of global fisheries are already fished at capacity, or overfished, according to the UN.Millions of Indians who live along the country's coastline and depend on fishing as their primary source of livelihood, and face the risk of losing their food security and income due to destructive fishing practices and threat to marine health. At an early morning beach side auction in Malvan in Sindhudurg , local fishermen brought in their fish catch for sale. The business is not what it used to be and marine pollution is killing the fish, says traditional fisherman Yashwant Sumant Lone. \"The pollution is increasing day by day…the sea water also gets polluted because of the ( chemical ) sprays and oil. That's why the fish stock has been declining,\" he says.Sindhugarh's mangrove forests have also been facing a survival threat .To help preserve the region's marine diversity as well as its expansive mangrove cover, UNDP has helped set up a crab farming project.Mud crabs thrive in mangrove wetlands. At Pirawadi Achara village in Sindhudurg, a group of 9 women and one man has been successfully harvesting crabs since 2014.The 2 acres stretch includes nurseries for crab seedlings and it takes 8-9 months for the crabs to grow to a big size. The enclosure has mesh nets to keep the crabs within the farm. The crab farmers follow pools of water as they walk through the sludge, digging to check for bigger crabs which sell for about 15 US-dollars per kilogram.During the last cycle of the crab harvest, the group earned nearly 1000 US-Dollars after accounting for expenses in buying the crablets (young crabs). Crab farmer Samiksha Gopal Gavkar says the crab farming has helped preserve the mangroves which were earlier neglected by the private landowners: \"Earlier, when this (crab farming) was not happening here, people used to come and take the mangrove branches… they also used to cut the trees. But now that we have this project, none of the trees or the branches are being cut. That's why you see so much greenery all around - not only are the trees protected but the crabs too get the protection from the sun.\"The saltwater-tolerant mangrove trees protect low-lying coastlines against erosion by trapping soil in their roots. But the forests are being lost to land development projects and the firewood needs of local residents. N Vasudevan is the Chief of Mangrove Forests for the Maharashtra Government. He says the eco-friendly practice of crab farming in mangroves can avoid the \"negative consequences of conventional aquaculture.\"\"With very little manipulation of the environment, you can grow crabs wherever you have mangroves,\" he says.Experts say the need to link livelihoods of local communities with the conservation of marine diversity is key to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for everyone by 2030. \"You cannot work on bio-diversity or life under water in isolation, without looking at the livelihoods of people, the bread and butter, you know, you can put in front of your family at night,\" says UNDP's Marina Walter. As the fishing season closes on the west coast with the onset of the monsoons, it is time to prepare for the upcoming festivals with traditional song and dance.Villagers gather every evening to offer prayers to their deities, seeking their blessings and hoping for a good fishing season when they go back to the sea after the rains. In Sindhudurg, community-based fisheries resource management has helped in the adoption of sustainable fishing practices and livelihoods. With global warming and climate change also threatening marine ecosystems and coastal habitats, the challenge will be to balance the need for oceans to support human lives and to protect their fragile eco systems.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
