Various of children doing drills for soccer practice LEAD-IN:Lifestyle and dietary changes in India are causing a sharp increase of diabetes in children. Nearly 30 percent of India's teenagers are obese, almost twice the number than in 2010, according to health ministry statistics. STORYLINE:Fifteen-year-old Rohin Sarin is playing a virtual game of soccer on his Playstation 4 when he starts feeling light-headed, his blood sugar levels are dipping. He quickly removes his insulin pen from a refrigerator in his room and gives himself one of four daily jabs.\"I've got my insulin pens,\" says the 9th grade student. \"Because my body is not producing any insulin, my pancreas aren't producing any insulin. So I have to take a few insulin shots, three times a day, and sometimes before some small meals like a brunch or evening meal.\" Sarin is one of a growing number of Indian children with diabetes.\"Sometimes, it affects me negatively,\" he says. Unlike other students on the school's cricket team, Rohin says he has to be extra careful and eat regularly to keep himself from fainting.More than two decades of rapid economic growth has changed Indians' lifestyles. People eat out more often, and prefer Western-style junk food over traditional lentil and vegetable meals. Gunjan Malhotra, Sarin's mother and a medical officer in the Indian Army, says she has banned junk food and sugary drinks in her house and ensures she goes for a run with Sarin every day. \"Nowadays, the concept of having junk food and coke (cola), all that… I think that should not be given to the kids at all.And secondly, any kind of sports. It's not just for the kids, even for the parents. Any kind of sport will make you and keep you healthy. It is very important. Especially, if you start it young.\"The lifestyle changes have brought a sharp rise in obesity, along with diseases such as diabetes, even as India still has some of the world's worst levels of malnourishment. In bigger cities like New Delhi, parents are enrolling children for after school activities, as the concept of children voluntarily going out to play is being replaced by gadgets and couch surfing. Dr. Monica Arora, a specialist with the Public Health Foundation of India says: \"There has been this epidemiological transition. With globalisation, we have got access to high-fat food and very unhealthy lifestyle. So, the way it is affecting adolescents and children particularly, in the Indian context, with this rapid urbanisation we are seeing more and more children now getting restricted to their household only.\" Nearly 30 percent of India's teenagers are obese, nearly twice the number in 2010, according to health ministry statistics. India has 70 million diabetics, though it has no data on how many are children.Health experts warn that India is on track to nearly double that to 120 million cases, or nearly 10 percent of the population, in the next eight years. That would put it on par with the United States, with 9.3 percent of the population diabetic, or China, where 11 percent, or 109 million, have been diagnosed, according to the International Diabetes Federation.Dr. Amit Jain, a paediatrician in New Delhi, says he has seen an increase in number of children with lifestyle diseases that walk into his clinic.\"The amount of children who are getting into obesity is also increasing, and that is one of the major factors because of which they develop diabetes or related problems. And, another factor which is very important is the stress factor. In the age group of, let's say I will say from 14 to 18 years, they are subjected to different kinds of stress for example, examination stress or peer group pressure stress and related other things which have a compounding effect.\" Alarmed by the trend, the government is working to screen 500 million people aged 30 and older for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases by 2019. Arora is hopeful that with the right public health measures applied at the correct time, India can curb the problem from becoming a full-blown epidemic. \"We definitely have a huge burden (of diabetes), but learning from the developed world, we know the strategies, we know the answers, we know what are the policy triggers which need to be started now. So we can avoid going through the same stages which the developed world has gone through and has seen the full impact of this burden, and jump from this stage straightaway to a stage where we start seeing a decline.\"Most of India's diabetes cases are Type 2, occurring when extra weight limits the body's ability to produce or use insulin to turn food into energy. By comparison, Type 1 diabetes is a natural inability to produce insulin. The disease requires a lifetime of attention to diet and exercise and access to proper medical treatment, without which diabetics are at risk of blindness, limb amputations, heart or kidney failure and stroke.====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
