Wide pan of tour bus passingLEADIN:Tourists have long been fascinated and horrified in equal measure by the former Khmer Rouge prison S21 and 'Killing Fields' near Phnom Penh. But until recently visiting them often involved haggling with unscrupulous tuk-tuk drivers and unofficial local guides. Now a new bus tour company is bringing tourists to both sites as well as providing a documentary to explain the history of the sites.STORYLINE:The distinctive red buses of the \"Killing Fields \u0026 Prison S21 Bus Tour\" picks up passengers directly from their hotels in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh. The air-conditioned buses run twice a day transporting tourists to both the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre. \"Before tourists had to order a tuk-tuk and go by themselves but not since my company opened two years ago,\" says bus driver Ne Chanta. \"I know that the tourists are very happy with our service. Plus we have an historical documentary to show them so they can learn about Cambodia's incredibly tragic history at that time.\" An audio documentary is played before the tourists arrive at their first stop - the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, or S21, a former high-school turned torture centre under the Khmer Rouge (KR).An estimated 17,000 people were imprisoned and horribly tortured at S21. All but a handful were destined for execution, most of them bludgeoned to death and buried at the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, 17 kilometres south of the city. Around two to three million Cambodians died under the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979 - from overwork, starvation or execution - as the radical communists attempted to install an agrarian-based utopia. The buildings at S21 are preserved as they were found when the Khmer Rouge was driven out by invading Vietnamese forces in 1979.Today the photographs of many of the victims taken on their arrival are on display in the classrooms where they were held prisoner. The tour company organises private guides where visitors can learn the harrowing truths of the prison. Tourist Valeria Maslova from Los Angeles was keen to visit the most important sites in the city.\"And having the English commentary on the bus right beforehand really got you into the mindset to be able to come here and really take everything in and learn about what happened and as well hopefully learn from the mistakes and hopefully not repeat them in the future\" she says. Marissa Carruthers, is the editor of AsiaLIFE magazine. She says the tours are a good way to time pressed tourists to visit the site, but is worried that it is not enough time for fully comprehend what happened in Cambodia in the late 1970s. \" So I think the half day bus tours are a really good idea for the majority of tourists who tend to come to Phnom Penh for a short amount of time and they want to see these important sites. However I do have a slight reservation in that I'm not sure that half a day is maybe enough time for visitors to get round these sites to kind of understand the enormous, the enormity of it and to really kind of appreciate the stories that are being told there and the message that is trying to be got across \" says Carruthers. After S21, the bus travels on to the Killing Fields forty minutes south where many of those held prisoner at S21 were later killed and buried in mass graves. An historical television documentary is played on board where the tourists can learn more of the country's tragic history. Known officially as the Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre, the site is centred around a memorial stupa containing the remains of hundreds of victims exhumed from the mass graves in the early 1980's.During the first year of S21, bodies were buried near the prison but by the end of 1976 they had run out of space so the prisoners were trucked here to Choeung Ek for execution and burial. The Choeung Ek Killing Fields are the largest known mass graves of victims of the Khmer Rouge, with 8,895 bodies exhumed and many more still buried. The ragged clothes of the victims, as well as their bones and teeth, still come to the surface during the annual rainy season and are displayed in glass cases. \"I was in my twenties when this was happening here in this country and I didn't take it seriously,\" says Jeff Winter, a Christian pastor visiting from Orlando, Florida. \"And today on this tour I am really blown away and very hurt in my spirit to think that this happened not that many years ago. I've been to Dachau, I've been to Auschwitz, I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, I've been to the the Holocaust Museum in Israel, in Jerusalem, and this in my opinion is much more striking and much more despairing in my spirit than even those places that I went to.\" With tourists still flocking to the sites, the 'Killing Fields \u0026 Prison S21 Bus Tour' plans to add more buses to the fleet in the near future. ====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
