I started to consume drugs when I was nine years old, I was a child, nobody shows you the right way, only people coming with prejudices. SOUNDBITE (French) Amina Amalou, doctor:\"First of all you have to love this job, because it's not easy to work with this kind of patients, they are patients who suffer, we have to understand them, and I underline the term patient. It's a mental sufferance with a psychiatric link. There are a lot of addiction types and psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolarity, schizophrenia and personality disorders. These patients need to be taken care of, they have to be listened to, they also need to be accompanied because they're fragile people.\" 19. Dr Amalou talking to an ex-drug user in her office20. SOUNDBITE (French) Amina Amalou, doctor:\"The Blida centre was founded in 1996, it's the first centre to treat drug addicts, with a capacity of 40 beds for men and 10 for women, in addition to its units. The centre has a unit of consultation that assures daily consultations everyday of the week. We have all age groups, from minors to 60-year-old people, we even had patients who were 70 years old or more. The centre of Blida represents all categories of Algeria, we receive them (patients) from all over the country, from Tamanrasset, Adrar, Tizi, Blida, Chlef, because it's the only active centre in Algeria.\" 23. You have to be the doctor of yourself, if you give yourself an inappropriate medicine you have to claim (responsibility) and change it. Blida city from the mountain  LEADIN:A drug treatment centre in the Algerian city of Blida is giving drug addicts a chance to turn their lives around.STORYLINE:It is difficult to determine the number of drug addicts in Algeria but one official report estimated in 2010 that the country had over 300,000 drug users.And of those, only a small percentage are receiving treatment for addiction.The national office for the fight against drugs and drug addiction (ONLDT) estimates that the 15-35 age group has the highest drug usage rates and recent studies have raised alarm bells that drugs are increasingly finding their way into schools.Since opening its doors in 1996, a centre in Frantz Fanon hospital in Blida that has been at the forefront of treatment in the country.Outpatients and inpatients, young and old, receive support and counselling seven days a week. One such patient is a 24-year old woman who gives her name as Linda.Linda has been using drugs since she was nine years old.\"I was a child, nobody shows you the right way,\" she says, hiding her face so as to protect her identity.\"I started with weed then different kinds of pills and psychotropic drugs.\"It got so bad that her parents had her jailed.But, one step at a time, she is turning things around.She has now found a job at a small events management firm.Patients like Linda can stay at the centre to receive daily treatment, with 40 beds available to accommodate men and 10 for women.Staff, such as psychiatrist Amina Amalou, provide support and assistance to help those struggling to kick the habit - but it's not easy.\"First of all you have to love this job, because it's not easy to work with this kind of patients, they are patients who suffer, we have to understand them,\" says Amalou.Amalou sees a lot of different people coming through the door of the centre.\"It's the first centre to treat drug addicts, with a capacity of 40 beds for men and 10 for women,\" Amalou says.\"We have all age groups, from minors to 60-year-old people, we even had patients who were 70 years old or more.\"And patients come from across the country to receive treatment at the Blida centre.One young man, Karim, travelled more 500 kilometres (310 miles).\"My life has changed since I came to this centre, they take care of us, but we should be careful, it's up to us,\" he says, aware that only he can ultimately change his life.He also has advice for those who risk going down the same path.\"I call on young people to stop taking drugs or they will go nowhere (in life).\"   The Blida centre's holistic approach to helping drug addicts is being copied around the country, with
