Various of camels resting after raceLEADIN:Trainers and their camels have been racing in Wadi Rum.The event included several races and hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the animals run across the desert. STORYLINE:The net is lifted and the camels are off, racing across the Jordanian desert.It's still early - not yet 6 a.m. - but there are plenty of race enthusiasts at Wadi Rum.Trainers follow their beasts in 4x4s, encouraging them on by beeping their horns or through radios attached to the camels' backs.There are several races ranging from 1 to 3 kilometres (0.62 to 1.86 miles) and divided into age categories.Imad Farraj's camel came second in one of the races. He says it was a \"nice competition\".The track is more than 300 (186 miles) south of the Jordanian capital, Amman, and was build in 2005 with funds from UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. More than 240 camels are registered to compete in this two-day event.There are cash prizes up for grabs with the winners receiving up to 400 Jordanian dinars (560 US dollars), trophies and bragging rights. The race is an old tradition in Jordan and across the region. But racers have adapted to the technology of the 21st century. As child jockeys have been banned in some countries, camels are now mounted and directed by robotic jockeys. The trainers remotely control the robots, and can whip and talk to their camels through them using a radio on the animal back.Camel owner Mahmoud Mohmmad doesn't think he has achieved his potential today.One of his animals was predicted to get first place.\"But she failed and so we got the 2nd and 3rd place,\" he says.Races are extremely popular and attract a crowd.People come from all over Jordan to place bets and admire the camels as they compete against the dramatic topography of 'The Valley of the Moon.'
