SOUNDBITE (English) Tilda Swinton, actress (and producer) – about being more hands on this time, compared to her first Bong Joon-Ho movie, \"Snowpiercer\":\"When we made Snowpiercer (also directed by Bong Joon-ho, the 'Okja' director) I came into Snowpiercer maybe two years before we shot it. This one I've been there from the very beginning and seeing what happens, which is it's like a sort of mushroom that grows in his head (Bong Joon-ho, 'Okja' director) over the course of the years, at the point of which it's ready to go he starts to invite people in to translate it into the film and he wants collaboration. He's a very inclusive and communicative person and he wants to be amused so he invites us to amuse him.\"3. SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Collins, actress – on what she loved about the themes in the film:\"I just love that they're all flawed human beings in their own way. Every character in this film is actually flawed in their own way but what drives them all is their inner passion and whether or not some of those are moral, morally correct or not, it's that there are so many conversations that can stem from this movie and it either makes you question the beliefs you had or think new ways about things, whether that's food, politics, environment, love, relationships. There was so much in it and there was so much layered and on top of it you have this humour that Bong (Joon-ho) always inserts into his films so there was just such a colourful collection of characters and imagery that spoke so highly to me.\"4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Gyllenhaal, actor – on playing drunk, narcissistic, badly dressed zoologist:\"There were a number of times of discussions about his behavior and, sort of, what he wore and just the, as you do, as you talk to a director, I never have laughed as much thinking about or talking about a character with a director, to say. But he is a, he's a, he does hold the whole film in his mind and I think that in that, in the structured frame, that he creates these very specific... he gives you tremendous room to explore, and he also allows for that sort of big bombastic type of performance, which as a performer so often in cinema, in particular, you don't have the opportunity to do.\"5. SOUNDBITE (English) Giancarlo Esposito, actor - on the first time he saw the design for \"Okja,\" and bringing the pig to life:\"God, I was up in Method Studio cutting a film that I directed and produced and I walked by an open doorway and I saw this huge pig on the wall, and I went 'what, wait a minute', and I had just met with director Bong a week before, didn't know that they were going to be working and doing it, a whole different crew. And I walked in and they were all fans of mine from another show, 'wait, wait, wait I don't want to talk about that - I want to talk about this pig, is this Okja?', and they said 'yeah'. So I thought it was pretty fantastic, always wondered how we'd make that pig on that wall, that huge pig, come to life on set and director Bong did it in a beautiful way, because we did have a model of the pig with two guys operating it with sticks so we could feel the immense physical nature of that animal and it was pretty fantastic.\"6. SOUNDBITE (English) Lily Collins, actress – on acting against the foam 'stuffy' that replaced Okja on set:(Reporter: \"How was working with the Okja substitute, the foam creature...\")Collins: \"The massive stuffy. It was great, we had Eric and Steve and all those guys that were the creators of, but also inside the different body parts of the pig to allow us to really emote and create a bond with this fake creature, at least it wasn't a tennis ball but they really did an impeccable job of explaining the way that the body would move, and our interactions with it so that when we saw the final product last night it really was as if that was there with us, which is very rare I feel.\"7. SOUNDBITE (English) Steven Yeun, actor – on the precision of Okja's design:\"To see how specific he was about how he wanted the eyes, how he wanted it to emote, how he wanted even the uniboob, down to that, those were all very specific things that you could see working in his mind as he would give notes here and there about it and that was really great because it also informed, you know, us interacting with it because then you get to really understand the nuance of the creature.\"8. SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Dano, actor and Lily Collins, actress – on acting in balaclavas during heatwave in South Korea:Dano: \"Yeah it did get a little toasty, that's right.\"Collins: \"It was hot\" Dano: \"I forgot about that which must mean I had a good time that my memory is rose-coloured. It was toasty, it was great, Korea was great, we had a, you know, beautiful big film to make there. Bong is, you know, one of the biggest film-makers in Korea and it was really fun because we were making, like, a huge film and it's sort of a film that feels independent because Netflix gave Bong so much freedom, and there was no other cooks in the kitchen, yet we were romping around all over Seoul with a giant pig.\" 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Steven Yeun, actor – on enjoying having a foot in each culture , reflecting his role as a Korean-American translator in the film: \"It was nice to sit in the middle pocket of that two, to split those two cultures and I had a wonderful time just, kind of, threading that needle of being the Korean part and also the American part, but also being uniquely Korean-American, that you kind of can't even replicate if you, let's say if you got a Korean actor to play, the nuances wouldn't have been there because, fortunately or unfortunately, I'm on an island as well, no it was really, it was really fascinating.\" 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Dano, actor – on the dual language cast and set:\"Well I do think it was funny to have an English crew and a Korean crew and hear both things always, sort of, repeated, but luckily Bong, not only is the script so clear but the storyboards he makes are so beautiful and clear and that's like a universal language so everybody's definitely on the same page going to work.\"NETFLIX11. Trailer clip \"Okja\" STORYLINE:SWINTON, GYLLENHAAL, DANO AND CO-STARS LOOK BACK AT THE MAKING OF GIANT PIG FANTASY 'OKJA'Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano are among the A-listers who join young Korean actress An Seo Hyun for Bong Joon-Ho's fantasy \"Okja,\" about a girl and her best friend – a giant pig.Lily Collins, Steven Yeun and Giancarlo Esposito also feature in the tale, which is in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. An Seo Hyun plays an innocent but determined Korean girl, trying to rescue the enormous, genetically modified \"superpig\" that she's raised in her isolated mountain farm, from the clutches of the giant corporation which financed the project for food production.Swinton plays the image-obsessed company CEO. The actress, who also starred in director Bong's 2013 \"Snowpiercer,\" is a producer on his latest project– and says she enjoyed being even more hands on with the collaborative filmmaker.\"I came into Snowpiercer maybe two years before we shot it. This one I've been there from the very beginning and seeing what happens, which is it's like a sort of mushroom that grows in his head (Bong Joon-ho's) over the course of the years, at the point of which it's ready to go he starts to invite people in to translate it into the film and he wants collaboration. He's a very inclusive and communicative person and he wants to be amused so he invites us to amuse him.\"Gyllenhaal adds he has \"never laughed so much\" during pre-shoot chats about his character, a heavy drinking, badly dressed TV zoologist, trying to save his failing ratings by becoming the face of the corporation.Dano, Yeun and Collins join in as members of an Animal Liberation Front team, with their own plans for Okja.Collins explained what she loved about the themes of the story.\"Every character in this film is actually flawed in their own way but what drives them all is their inner passion and whether or not some of those are moral, morally correct or not, it's that there are so many conversations that can stem from this movie and it either makes you question the beliefs you had or think new ways about things, whether that's food, politics, environment, love, relationships. There was so much in it and there was so much layered and on top of it you have this humour that Bong (Joon-ho) always inserts into his films so there was just such a colourful collection of characters and imagery that spoke so highly to me.\"\"Better Call Saul\" and \"Dear White People\" star Esposito recalls the first time he chanced across the design for the huge, intelligent pig, Okja.\"I walked by an open doorway and I saw this huge pig on the wall, and I went 'what, wait a minute', and I had just met with director Bong a week before, didn't know that they were going to be working and doing it, a whole different crew. And I walked in and they were all fans of mine from another show, 'wait, wait, wait I don't want to talk about that - I want to talk about this pig, is this Okja?', and they said 'yeah'. So I thought it was pretty fantastic, always wondered how we'd make that pig on that wall, that huge pig, come to life on set.\"Created in post production, the pig was substituted on set by a \"stuffy\" – a puppet rig, made up of grey foam parts, puppeteered by the visual effects animation team.A lot more effective than the usual stand in tennis ball, recalled Collins.\"It was great, we had Eric and Steve and all those guys that were the creators of, but also inside the different body parts of the pig to allow us to really emote and create a bond with this fake creature, at least it wasn't a tennis ball but they really did an impeccable job of explaining the way that the body would move, and our interactions with it so that when we saw the final product last night it really was as if that was there with us, which is very rare I feel.\"Together with Dano and Yuen, the star donned a balaclava to play out a dramatic rescue scene in downtown Seoul – in the midst of unseasonably warm weather.\"Yeah it did get a little toasty, that's right\", said Dano, \"I forgot about that which must mean I had a good time that my memory is rose-coloured. It was toasty, it was great, Korea was great, we had a, you know, beautiful big film to make there.\" As well as South Korea, Bong also filmed in New York and Vancouver. Despite an on screen running joke about mistranslations, Dano insists working with a cast and crew that didn't all speak the same language wasn't a problem.\"Well I do think it was funny to have an English crew and a Korean crew and hear both things always, sort of, repeated, but luckily Bong, not only is the script so clear but the storyboards he makes are so beautiful and clear and that's like a universal language so everybody's definitely on the same page going to work.\"Yeun, who plays the Korean-American ALF member playing fast and loose with his translations between the activists and the young Muji, adds that he loved having a foot in each cultural camp on set.\"It was nice to sit in the middle pocket of that two, to split those two cultures and I had a wonderful time just, kind of, threading that needle of being the Korean part and also the American part, but also being uniquely Korean-American, that you kind of can't even replicate if you, let's say if you got a Korean actor to play, the nuances wouldn't have been there\" \"Okja\" is released on Netflix in the UK on 23 June, and on the US streaming service 28 June. The winner of the Palme d'Or award will be announced
