A sculpture festival in Siberia is giving visitors the chance to do just that.Hundreds of artists from around the world take part in the event, creating wooden carvings of mythical figures and fantastical creatures that hide among the pine trees. STORYLINE:A mythical wise old man greeting visitors here at Lukomorye - a fairytale sculpture park deep in the Siberian forest.Lukomorye is a fictional land in Russian folklore, featuring in the work of the poet Pushkin. According to legend, it's a place at the very end of the world. But this forest is, in reality, about 70 kilometres (43 miles) northwest of the Siberian town of Irkutsk, not far from the vast lake Baikal. It's populated by 150 carved wooden sculptures of everything from elves and dragons, to peacocks and lions. Visitors say the festival manages to capture a magical atmosphere. \"It's really like Lukomorye, especially at the start, from Pushkin's fairytale,\" says Olga Finayenko. \"(It appears) undisturbed, not artificial, natural,\" says Lidia Kashirina.The festival's organisers say their aim is to promote the traditional craft of woodcarving and revive interest in folk history. Local businessman Ivan Butenko came up with the idea for Lukomorye more than 30 years ago, when as a student he spent time building wooden playgrounds for children. \"When I was in a (student) construction brigade (at summer camps), we built children's playgrounds of wood. And at that time, when I watched the real master craftsmen - I'm not a master, as well as not working with wood - I had the idea to make an interesting park. Many years passed before my dreams turned into 'Lukomorye',\" he says.Butenko's dream finally became reality in 2011, when the first festival of wooden sculpture was held here. Since then, hundreds of artists from all over the world have visited and worked in the park to make their mark in this fantasy world. This year, 43 sculptors from France, Switzerland, Serbia, India, China, Japan, Argentina, Ecuador, Zimbabwe, and various regions of Russia are taking part.Adriana Oplanich and Lele Trabb have come all the way from Argentina - a five day journey.They say they are here to learn new techniques and different styles. They usually carve more abstract pieces in their home country, unlike the participants here, who tend to create more realistic carvings of animals and people. Another difference here is in the wood itself: the local pine is much softer than the hard native South American Quebracho trees they are used to carving. \"In Argentina we have another trees, very, very hard, one of the most hard, hardest in the world. And this tree (pine) is soft, very nice for doing a sculpture.\"Oplanich and Trabb's work depicts the history of indigenous tribes in Argentina.The theme for this year's sculptures is 'hope'.To turn their ideas into reality, the carvers use chainsaws, grinders, axes and knives, gradually smoothing and refining the wood into its finished shape. Thierry Lauwers, the chief judge, describes what he's looking for in a winning piece. \"The criteria for here, for the competition, is the technical side, is the way to use as much as wood from the log itself because from one log you can make one small lighter (match), you know. And also the spirit behind. And what very important is this is the story you see, and the story which you don't see in the sculpture.\"This year's winner is Hikaru Kodama from Japan.He is regarded as one of the best wood carving sculptors in the world to date - he has won the world carving championship three times.Kodama's work depicts a six-armed woman with three faces and an angel's wings.\"This sculpture (named 'Heaven and Earth') expresses the wishes of those who are just born, growing up, living, dying and are already dead. That's what I've tried to embody in my sculpture,\" he says. Kodama takes home prize money of 150-thousand rubles (approx. 2,600 US dollars).
