And the city is well known to us through Canaletto's paintings.\"Canaletto's dramatic works of Venice's busy waterways became particularly popular among wealthy Grand Tourists, groups of mainly wealthy tourists conducting cultural journeys across Europe. They were drawn to the city by its numerous cultural attractions and often wanted a piece of it to take home. In a time before postcards or smartphone selfies, Canaletto's paintings and prints became a popular option. That meant he was allowed to take certain artistic liberties with Venice's geography in order to create prettier pictures.\"Canaletto's paintings look like they show real scenes, but the thing about him was that he was always manipulating the reality and bringing together buildings to create a dramatic, almost theatrical painting,\" explains Razzall.\"What he created was something for the tourists to take home,\" says art critic Estelle Lovatt.\"Today you'd buy a postcard, but then there were no postcards. So, you would commission Canaletto to do an oil paintings and if you couldn't afford that, he would also give you the opportunity to purchase a print which was of course much smaller, much cheaper, you could roll it up, put it in your suitcase.\"The Venetian painter is long thought to have used a camera obscura to achieve such drawing accuracy. The device helps artists trace images formed by rays of light passing through a box.But in preparation for this exhibit, experts used infrared photographs of these six Canaletto drawings to view the preparatory carbon pencil drawings beneath. They showed how, rather than using the simple device, Canaletto set out the buildings with painstaking accuracy, plotting chimneys, arches and windows.\"The use of the camera obscura might be seen as a kind of cheat and Canaletto, he's just recording, just tracing down what he sees in front of him,\" says Razzall.\"But these infrared images show that he was actually very carefully putting together these sheets. So, he's using his creative imagination and expression to make these drawings and paintings.\"The exhibit also includes works by Canaletto's contemporaries, exploring how they captured the allure of Venice. In 1762, a young King George III purchased almost the entire collection of art collector and Canaletto's agent, Joseph Smith. That acquisition now means Britain's Royal Collection Trust owns what's thought to be the largest collection of works by Canaletto.\"He would be his own admission maybe make a building a little bit closer to the left or make it slightly taller if it helped with the composition, because when people left Venice and they had just this wonderful painting, the painting had to stand in its own right as a great work of art,\" says Lovatt. It's a demonstration of Canaletto's business sense, but also his background in stage and theatre design.\"If you look at any of his paintings, you will see that predominantly what he gives majestic scale to is the architecture,\" says Lovatt.\"And then the people come in like actors and very cleverly to entice you to part with more money than just buying one, the images seem to follow on, there's a narrative that goes possibly from one paintings through to another half a dozen, so you think you have to buy all six.\"'Canaletto \u0026amp; the Art of Venice' runs at Buckingham Palace's Queen's Gallery 19 May - 12 November.London, UK - 18 May 20171.
