STORYLINE: ARCO Lisboa has been showcasing some of the finest artists and galleries of the contemporary scene in the Portuguese capital.A selection of 58 national and international galleries chosen by the organizers, showcasing artwork raging from historic vanguards to modern art.The contemporary art world is embracing Lisbon once again with more galleries and new art related events and activities. Angie Vandycke of the Filomena Soares Gallery says their stand presents an array of art from young artists. \"It is the second time we take part in this art fair, it is very important for us to have this fair in Lisbon. We represent various artists, both Portuguese and from abroad, from Angola, United States, Spain. From the Portuguese artists I highlight Helena Almeida, Pedro Barateiro, Rodrigo Oliveira. These are young artists, with a career and this is why I think our stand is very beautiful with a collection of work that is very diverse, with sculptures, photography and paintings as you can see behind me, so it is very diverse.\"Vandycke says that Lisbon's improving image is attracting artists to the city. \"Now it is like there's a Lisbon brand that everybody wants to take part, by living here, developing projects, buying apartments, Lisbon is very much trending, and I think this can also be good to attract people or to push people into making new things, things that maybe before would not be possible and I think it is very important to have this fair in Portugal,\" she says.Fernando Santos, who runs his own gallery, says that the economy, and the art scene, is recovering after Portugal's role in the Eurozone debt crisis. \"For this second edition of ARCO Lisboa I think we have strong expectations, it will go well, it is also a good timing, the economy is improving and naturally there's a lot of demand and people begin to be more present again, after the past years crisis, so I think the art revival is coming back.\"During the recent European economic crisis, countries that ran into heavy debt - Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus and Spain - got bailout loans from the other members in return for massive cuts to public spending. Portugal's finances are healing, but only after years of cutbacks, including wage freezes and pension cuts. Earlier this year the IMF says Portugal must do more, but recognised the economy's \" welcome upturn.\" That has included unemployment dropping to an eight-year low and growth above the Eurozone average.The IMF took part in a 78 billion-euro ($82 billion) rescue for Portugal in 2011 amid the debt crisis.\"We are not able to bring all our artists but we try to create a group that is linked within their artwork. This time we have a series of artworks of great size, I think we have a nice representation in our stand for ARCO Lisboa,\" says Santos of his display at ARCO Lisboa.
