Special forces regiment'.The eastern part of Mosul was controlled by the militants until Iraqi forces recaptured it in January. But the group's sinister messages still hang on some buildings and walls.One street artist, Abdulrahman Saad al-Dlaimy, has made it his mission to rid his city of their propaganda.He's determined to erase all the existing murals, and repaint them with images and messages emphasising Mosul's strength and long, colourful past.He says the idea came after watching one of IS's videos called 'A Year After Liberation' in which they pledged to destroy artefacts, shrines and tombs throughout Mosul.\"This was what motivated me to draw all these statues, after the liberation, in my paintings,\" he says. \"And eliminate the marks that they left in the city, where they thought they could terrify the people even after they have gone.\"His artwork includes bulls and lions, pictures of Iraqi forces, and famous landmarks of Mosul including its minarets and shrines. Abdulrahman says he is covering his own costs, namely the paint and the brushes, and has already covered 12 murals with his own work.Security forces are still fighting to reclaim the other, western, half of the city from IS. But for now Abdulrahm's aim is simply: \"to show a colourful image of this great city through brush and paint and send a message of truth and peace to the whole world.\"And that's a mission worth a round of applause.Mosul - 16 May 2017 1.
