It teaches important skills to this disabled community.Gamal lost her sight in 2016 which was a very difficult adjustment to make at the age of 26.But the centre has helped by training her in a number of hand crafts.She sells the baskets, bags and other items she makes, earning around 1,200 Sudanese pounds (180 US dollars) a month.Gamal urges other blind people to use the centre.\"Come on, come to learn and the centre will rehabilitate you. They will not treat you like you are statue at home,\" she says.\"Your little dreams will become big dreams when you come to study here, it will change you!  You will not be just an ordinary blind person; you will be a great person.\"Ethiopian Gafaar came to Sudan eight years ago.He's an Islamic Studies student at the University of the Holy Quran in Khartoum and the centre helps him with his course.The centre offers its services to blind students in many universities and helps them study by recording lectures and notes on phones, memory sticks or in mp3 format.Gafaar is receiving computer training.\"I wanted to learn by myself instead of asking others to help me,\" he explains.And trainer Hozifa Salah explains his students don't need to be able to see a monitor. They use a computer program designed for blind people.\"This program teaches them how to read the keyboard, how to memorise letters and numbers and how to use the calculator, etc,\" he says.The centre was set up in 1987 by a Dutch organisation. The Sudanese government has since taken over responsibility for funding the facility.At the moment, it has 83 enrolled students but claims to have helped more than 7,000 blind people across Khartoum.They get free training here. And some, like Abdallah Abdelraheem, have been employed here too.The partially blind man learnt carpentry when he came to the centre 13 years ago.Now he teaches those skills to new students. They take six months to a year to become competent carpenters.Teachers are paid 1,300 to 1,500 Sudanese pounds (194 to 225 US dollars) a month.Music teacher Dr Ali plays the violin for his pupils.He has taught sighted people during his career, but believes the blind have an advantage because their sense of hearing is more developed.\"The blind people have the ability to develop and improve their musical talent very fast. We are trying to help them to be active in their society and highlight their advantages as a group of blind people,\" he says.This is a place where staff don't believe disability should hold their students back.Khartoum, Sudan - 10 April 20171.
