STORYLINE:With arms wide spread, 30-year Sabiha Khanum is asking her beloved saint to bless her with a son. Khanum has  travelled alone for more than a thousand miles to the shrine of 13th century Sufi saint Syed Usman Marwandi, popularly known as Lal Shahbaz Qalandar for his ruby-coloured attire.She is one of the tens of thousands of devotees participating in the saint's 765th birthday celebrations, the three-day, annual Urs event in the city of Sehwan in Pakistan's southern Sindh province.This is the first Urs since  an Islamic State suicide bomber struck inside the famed shrine on February 16th killing at least 75 people in the deadliest attack in the country in more than two years.The bomber entered the main hall of the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan and detonated his payload amid dozens of worshippers, according to three security officials.These pictures show forensic and security personnel reviewing evidence and wreckage on morning after the blast.Khanum says that her husband didn't want her to come here due to security concerns.  \"What is there to be scared of when one believes? I know I will be in the presence of my saint come what may! Such terrorist attacks don't scare me. I will continue coming here every year. Till there is breath in my body, I will keep coming for my saint, God willing. I will continue coming even after Allah blesses me with a son. These terrorists are mistaken if they think they can scare us with such attacks. This won't stop devotees from coming here. You can see for yourself how many people are here.\"This note of defiance resonates throughout the festivities, including in the many rituals practiced at shrines.A sea of devotees – of all ages – congregate inside the main dome, where the saint's grave is situated. They tie beads, amulets, ribbons and other offerings as part of their votive demands and wishes.Placing Chaddar - piece of cloth with Islamic iconography -  as a token of gratitude is one of the rituals. Devotees also kiss the railing around the saint's grave.Baggu Ahmed of Pak Pattan is one of the regular visitors. He says the saint has answered his prayers.\"I neither had a son nor daughter even after eight years of marriage. I prayed to Allah's saint Lal Shahbaz to intercede on my behalf, and he gave me four children, all of them sons.\"Ahmed comes with his family every year, distributing alms and food. But the most important part of the visit, he adds, for him and his family – including his young son – is to pay his regards to their patron saint.The best way to offer gratitude, according to devotees, is the Dhamaal. Dhamaal is the rhythmic movement of bodies to the beat of the drum and religious music.It also is the official marker of the beginning of the birthday celebrations –on the 18th of Sha'aban as per the lunar calendar.Devotees are known to enter a trance-like state during the Dhamaal.  It was the weekly Dhamaal,  in which thousands participate, that was targeted by the Islamic state.While there is defiance amongst devotees during Dhamal there is also gratitude.Salima Bibi is a devotee from Narowal, Punjab.\"I pray all the devotees return home safe. I also pray to Allah for those doing security duty here that they live long and blessed lives. And may Allah also guide those who dared to attack Qalandar – for they will be wiped out of existence and Qalandar and our belief will remain steadfast,\" she says. Shrines in Pakistan are known for their syncretism.The shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar also attracts devotees from diverse faiths and belief systems.
