The celebrated play by Christopher Hampton is a comedy drama centered on academics, who, after dinner, sit around discussing the meaning of life, sex and love with a detached, superior insularity, blissfully unaware of news from the outside world where the prime minister has been assassinated. Ritchie, who plays one of the academics, says the theater is \"there to be enjoyed\" and prefers a more relaxed audience.\"I don't mind sweets and coughs and things because it makes you know that they are there,\" she says. \"It's not a church, it's there to be enjoyed and if people are finding it funny I think that would be the best thing.  But a responsive audience would be the best.\"BAFTA-winning actor Matt Berry, who plays a brash novelist, says he simply wants an audience to enjoy themselves.\"It sounds trite - I just want them to be into it,\" says Berry. \"If there is people that haven't been to the theater before, which I'm being told by everybody, you know, that that's what they are trying to do with the marketing, then I hope they really have fun, you know, and I hope that they then possibly then go and see other things.  That sounds kind of luvvie, but it's true.  You know, if they do kind of get into it, you know, and think 'well this is good, you know, this different, this sort of theater stuff.'  Then I suppose that's good isn't it?'\"The play's director,  Simon Callow always hopes for a witty audience who are \"alert to the possibilities of something.\"\"But the truth of the matter is our world is so pressured and so fractured and so...  We're assaulted by so much input from all sides that when we actually arrive at the theater and have our whatever it is, gin and tonic or a scotch, we're so frazzled and our brains aren't working well at all that actually the job of the actors and the playwrights and the director, lighting designer, set designer is to sort of massage you into a place where you can start to be more fully human and less battered.
