It marks the third time the 62-year old artist has a piece in Rockefeller Center.\"I'm so honored. I showed 'Puppy' I would imagine about a decade ago. Then I had 'Split Rocker,' maybe - I'd say about three or four years ago. And to be back here at Rockefeller Center with the 'Seated Ballerina,' I have to pinch myself. What an honor. This is the center of the world. There's so much taking place here. There are hundreds of thousands of people every day coming through. All different cultural backgrounds, all different ages, and uh, it's spectacular. It's such a vital place.\"Koons explained the significance of the massive installation.\"The piece is being installed. I did this with Kiehl's and the Art Production Fund to bring awareness that May is the international missing children's month. The 'Seated Ballerina' I think is an image that conveys optimism and a sense of potential for the future. You can see it in the ballerina. And I want every viewer that comes through Rockefeller Center to feel that enthusiasm and sense of potential for their own life. But what we are really dealing with and we don't want to forget are the missing children, and all also have the same type of desire and potential and want to be able to fulfill their parameters of what they could achieve in life. And they're not able to do that. Over 465-thousand children, alone in the United States went missing,\" Koons said. The issue is personal for Koons, whose wife at the time, took their two-year old son to Italy without his permission.\"I would say about twenty-something years ago I was a left-behind parent. I have a son that was abducted, a parental abduction, and he was taken to another country. I had custody in the United States. I was never able to bring my son back home, but I wanted to maintain a kind of confidence and faith in humanity. I was losing that. And so I turned to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. They had the idea of creating the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children. I became involved as a board member. And it's been a vehicle that's been able to let me try to not have the same situation to happen to other people. And to be participating, and really trying to avoid even worse situations for the missing and exploited children,\" Koons said.Koons was married to Italian porn star Ilona Staller, known professionally as Cicciolina, who took their son Ludwig to Italy. After a lengthy legal battle, the Italian court sided with Staller. Koons continually sells his pieces for record amounts, including his \"Balloon Dog,\" which fetched $58 million dollars at a Christies auction. But he claims it's not about the money.\"I always just wanted to participate, so from the time that I was a child what I was excited about was to be in a dialogue with artists like Roy Lichtenstein and (Andy) Warhol, (Salvador) Dali, you know, (Edouard) Manet, (Francis) Picabia. That's my joy. That's really my pleasure. That's what I value in life. The economic aspect of the work, it's an abstraction. The way I look at it, that I feel the best about it, really is that society is kind of assuming a certain responsibility by putting that amount of value on it, that they will protect it in the future. So than I think, OK, maybe it will be around a little longer than if nobody had an economic value to it.\"Koons also addressed funding the arts, which has come under fire with the Trump administration.\"You know what the arts do so effortlessly is connect all the human disciplines, and when you're involved with art, automatically, you can become involved with physics, philosophy, sociology, theology, aesthetics, dance - all the human disciplines.\"\"Seated Ballerina\" will be on display in Rockefeller Center until June 2.New York, 11 May 20171.
