Hundreds of international artists will exhibit their works at the Biennale, one of the most prestigious contemporary art fairs in the world. STORYLINE:Once every two years Venice plays host to contemporary artists from across the world for its celebrated Biennale.  At the Biennale pavilions - located near the heart of Venice - everything is almost ready ahead of this Saturday's Biennale official opening. Christine Macel has been chosen as the curator of the 57th Venice Biennale and of the main group exhibition also titled \"Viva Arte Viva\"; both will run for the next seven months. Macel has a background in art history and for the past 17 years she's been the Chief Curator at the Musée national d'art moderne – Centre Pompidou of Paris.She isn't new to the Biennale, having curated the French pavilion in 2013 and the Belgian pavilion in 2007. Macel says \"Viva Arte Viva\" plays on the double meaning of the word \"viva\" in Italian, signifying both \"hooray\" and \"alive\". \"Viva Arte Viva\" is an exclamation, an exhortation to art as well as a statement, that art is alive. \"The idea is to keep the double meaning of 'Viva Arte Viva' because I want both to celebrate the art and the artist and also to celebrate the life of the creation of today and to put the artist at the centre of the exhibition as a point of departure of the whole exhibition and of all the parallel projects of the exhibition,\" Macel explains. \"Viva Arte Viva\"'s main idea is that art is entrusted to reveal humanity at a time when humanity is jeopardised by war and uncertainty. In an era of unresolved tensions, populism and individualism \"Viva Arte Viva\" sees art as an act of resistance. \"Nowadays I think that art is especially important because art was always a big part of humanism. Humanism has developed in the Renaissance thanks to the art and culture and now that humanism, I mean human values are threatened by conflict, by the situation of the world that is kind of chaotic and uncertain, unpredictable it's more than ever important to associate the art to our lives, to find also a way to reinvent the reality and its future,\" Macel says. The \"Viva Arte Viva\" international group exhibit unfolds through nine pavilions or \"chapters\" disposed in a narrative sequence, each with its own story, showcasing the works of 120 artists from 51 countries.  \"Green Light - an Artistic Workshop\" by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, challenges Europe's struggle with the refugee crisis, showing a possible way out of it. Eliasson's installation imagines a world where migrants and locals harmoniously live and work together.  \"Green Light - an Artistic Workshop\" is set in a large office-like space where people from different ethnicities build modular objects together, recognising and welcoming their respective differences. The Biennale will host 85 national pavilions from countries all over the world, from France to the United States, from South Korea to Brazil. This year four nations are set to make their debut at the international art fair: Nigeria, together with the islands of Antigua and Barbuda in central America and the Pacific Ocean small nation of Kiribati. Time and identity inspire Nigeria's \"How About Now? exhibit showcasing the works of artists Victor Ehikhamenor, Peju Alatise and Qudus Onikeku. Victor Ehikhamenor's  installation \"A Biography of the Forgotten\" pays homage to Nigerian artists of the past, whose memory has been buried by the carelessness of colonialism.\"It's a way of looking at pre-colonial and post-colonial (Nigeria), you understand ? So that in-between, you understand, where were we before ? you know, and where are we now ? you know, so what are some of the bridges that broke during this intervention, during this colonial intervention ? you know, because a lot of things shifted, a lot of things were mislabelled, or things were not even labelled at all,\" Ehikhamenor explains. Located in the same pavilion, Peju Alatise's \"Flying Girls\" is the story of a wish, that of a ten-year-old Nigerian girl who dreams to be free and fly away like the birds that hover over her head. Alatise was inspired by two unresolved issues in his own country: the kidnapping of girls who often become sex slaves and that of child brides, of underage girls being married to older men. With \"Right Here, Right Now\" Nigeria artist Qudus Onikeku chooses a video dance performance to re-enact his country's violent colonial past and integrate it into the present.Venice - 10 May 20171.
