Wide pan 'The Division Bell' LEADIN: Rock band, Pink Floyd, has teamed up with the Victoria and Albert museum in London for a major new retrospective. It's to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the band's first album, \"The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn\" and debut single, \"Arnold Layne.\"STORYLINE: An iconic image from one of Pink Floyd's iconic songs - \"Another Brick in the Wall\" from the band's 1979 rock opera, \"The Wall\". Pink Floyd's Nick Mason says this major retrospective at London's Victoria and Albert Museum leaves him feeling \"rather surprised.\"The 73 year old drummer of the progressive rock group says he did not foresee the longevity of the world famous British band, when he helped found it in the 1960s.\"It's that curious thing that what's meant to be an entirely ephemeral sort of career lasting three years maybe - when I left college, my year master said, don't worry, go off, give it a year and come back. Well 50 years later I think they're probably not expecting me now.\"\"Their Mortal Remains\" incorporates the music, art and design that were at the heart of Pink Floyd's history, from their beginnings on the underground club scene in 1960s London to the present day.The band's debut single was 'Arnold Layne', which was released in March 1967 and written by Syd Barrett. Floyd were made up of Barrett, Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright. David Gilmour later joined at the end of '67. Barrett left in '68. \"The thing about Pink Floyd, they have right from their earliest beginnings in the 1960s fused what they look like on stage and how they present their music through their albums and album covers, the vision with the sound,\" says exhibition curator, Victoria Broackes.\"We're in one of the first rooms of the exhibition and here we look at how the band became the darlings of the underground in the late '60s and this of course was a period when music was not just representing the change that was going on in society and that was a massive change, but was actually leading that change. Pink Floyd, most of the members found themselves in London by the mid '60s, they started making their quite experimental music and became successful and a cult group really around the time they started playing at the UFO club.\"The exhibition is brimming with high tech audio visual events and surreal landscapes, but visitors are also treated to the seemingly mundane such as a cane used by a headmaster to beat Roger Waters while he was at school, and a book recording his misdemeanours and punishments.Mason - who notes the band rooted around their cellars and attics to contribute to the exhibit - says one of his favourite displays harks back to the group's beginnings.\"There's elements I like all the way through. I do like the idea of starting with the van, which was our very first band van that I remember quite clearly, 'cause it used to break down a lot. Cost 20 quid, and the guy who sold it said 'That's with new boots and blood' which meant new tyres and tax disc,\" he says. \"There are fantastic objects here which haven't been seen in public because the band themselves have only - they actually didn't think they had enough to do a complete exhibition, but actually once everybody started looking around they had fantastic things,\" says Broackes.\"But what we have also done is presented the collaborators, the people they worked with so closely to realise their visions, so the graphic designers, the photographers, the filmmakers, the architects, the engineers and we have sketches and designs and lyrics, a fantastic collection of musical instruments and technology all on show here.\"The exhibition was designed by Ray Winkler from Stufish Entertainment Architects - a company with a long history of building some of Floyd's best known tour visuals.\"When you see the modulation through the exhibition where you go from small to large, to really large, back to small and intimate, from black and white to polychromatic, that's where the joy of walking through the exhibition really is,\" he says. A nod to the cover of 1977 album \"Animals\" looms large next to the section devoted to the album, \"The Wall,\" with a twist on Battersea Power Station recreated in the room.Fans will also have their first look at material never shown before, including footage for \"The Wall\" passed over in favour of Alan Parker's now famous animation.\"We'd started filming on 'The Wall,' we initially filmed quite a lot of live material in Earls Court and then that got scrubbed because we went with the Alan Parker route eventually,\" explains Mason, \"so there's some clips from that, for instance, that certainly I hadn't seen for years.\"\"The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains\" presented by London's V\u0026A and Michael Cohl's Iconic Entertainment; Sound experience by Sennheiser; runs from 13 May 2017 – 1 October 2017. ====Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
