In the early 1950s, Chaplin was accused of having communist sympathies and was refused re-entry into the United States. He returned from exile in 1972 and was honored by the Lincoln Center Film Society. Since then, the award has been given out annually in his name.De Niro doesn't see that kind of political influence happening today.\"If they were given the opportunity to try to make people afraid, and intimidate them and scare them and harass them - scare them the way McCarthy did in the 50s, that's a problem. We won't get there with this administration. People will be so - will rise up as we've seen already. They will not tolerate it. No one will tolerate it. It's a different world. Then he added: \"We've learned from those mistakes.\"De Niro was referring to the House Un-American Activities Committee, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, who created the Hollywood blacklist, which prevented entertainers with communist ties or sympathies from working in Hollywood.Chaplin denied being a communist, opting to be called a \"peacemonger.\" He was blacklisted, and after leaving the United States to premiere his film, \"Limelight\" in London, he was denied a re-entry permit to return. As for being compared to Chaplin, De Niro feels honored, but feels the iconic star is in a class of his own.\"Well, I'm not in the same breath as Chaplin. Chaplin is in another - he was great, and I mean truly remarkable. So I'm honored to even be associated with him. But what he did and what I do are two different things, totally, of course. Not that this award is intended to be, to associate whoever gets it with him, but there's some I guess. But he was amazing, you know, really special,\" De Niro said.De Niro was joined at the event by co-stars and former recipients of the award, including Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, and Michael Douglas.Douglas arrived early enough to walk the red carpet and spoke of the magic that De Niro brings to the big screen.\"I remember when I first saw him in 'Mean Streets,' you know, and he really has this ability to, as we talked about, just inhale a character. I mean he really does become the uh, that person. 'Raging Bull,' what I you used to watch what he went through in gaining weight, and this and that. It was just pure essence. And, and he doesn't project, he just brings it - kind of brings you all to him. So I admire his unpredictability. He's got a danger quality about him as well. And I'm glad he's free for one night so he could show up to accept the award,\" Douglas said.Douglas spoke of his father, Kirk, who turned 100 years old last December. He's accompanied his son at a few events over the years. \"He was here for a couple. He was here for a few. He's a hundred now.\"Douglas also shared how his dad was feeling.\"He's doing great, man. Absolutely great,\" Douglas said.Carla Gugino, Samantha Mathis, and Ben Stiller also came out to support De Niro.Stiller starred alongside De Niro in \"Meet the Parents.\"\"Some people you say they're iconic, he is iconic. When you look at the film, the medium of film, and how long film has been around, and the amount of movies he's done, the time that he's had a career, he's had a huge impact on it. He's influenced so many people, so many actors. And so, if anybody is deserving of any one of these lifetime things, it's him. I think for him, it's probably, 'I got a lifetime more of work that I want to do, so don't honor me too quickly.' But he's already just laid down so much incredible work,\" Stiller said.Harvey Keitel, who starred with De Niro early in his career in \"Mean Streets,\" and \"Taxi Driver,\" finds a unique quality to his screen presence.\"It is magic, and it is a mystery. But the road to it is one that involves a great deal of work and joy and suffering in order to find yourself in the work. And Rob is a person who has found himself in the work, and that's why we're here tonight,\" Keitel said.After Chaplin received the award in 1972, other notable recipients included Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart, Barbra Streisand, and Al Pacino.
