Bravo!\" rang out early Friday as the first survivors were pulled from the debris, boosting spirits two days after the massive snow slide buried some 30 people.Four children were among those found alive, though the fate of the parents of one of them remained unknown as rescuers dug on.The luxury Hotel Rigopiano, in the Gran Sasso mountains 180 kilometres (115 miles) northeast of Rome, was hit by an avalanche that dumped 16½ feet (5 metres) of snow on top of the resort Wednesday.Relatives of the missing rushed from the mountain rescue operations centre to the seaside hospital where the survivors were taken for treatment in hopes that their loved ones were among the lucky few to be found.***Relatives and friends were queuing at Penne's town hall on January 23rd to pay their respects to a waiter who was killed in the avalanche at the Hotel Rigopiano in nearby Farindola on January 18th.Gabriele D'Angelo, 31, was very well known in Penne for his activity as a Red Cross volunteer and local residents say he had recently asked his girlfriend to marry him.While D'Angelo's friends and family went inside the town hall to view his coffin, the media were asked to stay outside.Beyond D'Angelo, Penne residents were also saddened by the loss of Sebastiano Di Carlo and Nadia Acconciamessa, who ran a pizzeria in the town and lived in nearby Loreto Aprutino.Rescue workers and army soldiers continued through the night to try and find the remaining 23 people still inside the snow-covered hotel.Rescue crews have carefully started using heavy equipment to speed up the search for those still buried, according to firefighters' spokesman Alberto Maiolo.But five days after the devastating avalanche, rescuers are fighting against time.Meanwhile, questions are intensifying into whether the local government underestimated the threat facing the isolated hotel.***Hopes faded on January 24th that any more survivors of the devastating avalanche that buried an Italian hotel would be found after the death toll more than doubled to 16.Thirteen people remained unaccounted for.Nine people had been pulled out alive from the rubble, the last one early on January 21st.Civil protection spokesman Roberto Oreficini said the efforts of the search crews are eased as they are now aided by excavators.Rescue teams were able to penetrate the central part of the hotel for the first time on January 23rd and found bodies in the bar and kitchen area.***Rescue crews recovered several more bodies January 25th from the rubble of a hotel crushed by an avalanche, bringing the death toll to 23, even as they mourned colleagues who were killed in a nearby helicopter crash.The emergency helicopter slammed into a mountainside January 24th as its crew was rescuing an injured skier.The two pilots, three crew members and the skier were killed. Some of the rescue team onboard had been working at the avalanche site about 100 kilometres (60 miles) away up until January 23rd.Avalanche recovery crews reported the toll from the January 18th disaster at the Hotel Rigopiano stood at 23 dead, with six people unaccounted for under the tonnes of snow and rubble. Search operations continued.Premier Paolo Gentiloni will brief parliament later Wednesday on the series of earthquakes, heavy snowfall and the avalanche that have pummelled central Italy in recent
